“ Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and throw stones in order to kill those who are sent to you. Many times I have wanted to gather your people together. I have wanted to be like a hen who gathers her chicks under her wings. And you would not let me.

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her own brood under her wings, and ye would not!

Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him—

like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them aloft.The Lord alone led him; no foreign god was with him.

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.Look, your house is left to you desolate.For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say,‘ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over itand said,“ If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace— but now it is hidden from your eyes.

They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”

This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says:“ In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.

but I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you.But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts. They went backward and not forward.

Jesus turned and said to them,“ Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.

May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”

Be glad, people of Zion, rejoice in the Lord your God, for he has given you the autumn rains because he is faithful. He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before.

“ This is why I weep and my eyes overflow with tears. No one is near to comfort me, no one to restore my spirit. My children are destitute because the enemy has prevailed.”

Again and again I sent my servants the prophets, who said,‘ Do not do this detestable thing that I hate!’But they did not listen or pay attention; they did not turn from their wickedness or stop burning incense to other gods.Therefore, my fierce anger was poured out; it raged against the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem and made them the desolate ruins they are today.

If only they were wise and would understand this and discern what their end will be!

Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says:‘ Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the Lord.

Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children.But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.

But it happened because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, who shed within her the blood of the righteous.

And Saul approved of their killing him. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you.You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this.

For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you warned them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you gave them into the hands of the neighboring peoples.

Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; let the people of Zion be glad in their King.

‘ Jehonadab son of Rekab ordered his descendants not to drink wine and this command has been kept. To this day they do not drink wine, because they obey their forefather’s command. But I have spoken to you again and again, yet you have not obeyed me.

This is what the Lord says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:“ I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your well- being like the waves of the sea.Your descendants would have been like the sand, your children like its numberless grains; their name would never be blotted out nor destroyed from before me.”

But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke,I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you—when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.“ Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me,since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord.Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,

He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.

The Lord, the God of their ancestors, sent word to them through his messengers again and again, because he had pity on his people and on his dwelling place.But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy.

How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.“ But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me.

My people are determined to turn from me. Even though they call me God Most High, I will by no means exalt them.
