If, in the manner of men, I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantage is it to me? If the dead do not rise,“ Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.

Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, And let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; Walk in the ways of your heart, And in the sight of your eyes; But know that for all these God will bring you into judgment.

Come now, you who say,“ Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”;whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.Instead you ought to say,“ If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”

Woe to those who rise early in the morning, That they may follow intoxicating drink; Who continue until night, till wine inflames them!

Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.

“ Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

God shall likewise destroy you forever; He shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, And uproot you from the land of the living. SelahThe righteous also shall see and fear, And shall laugh at him, saying,“ Here is the man who did not make God his strength, But trusted in the abundance of his riches, And strengthened himself in his wickedness.”

Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.

“ If I have made gold my hope, Or said to fine gold,‘ You are my confidence’;If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had gained much;

traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

“ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.

But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.

Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near;Who lie on beds of ivory, Stretch out on your couches, Eat lambs from the flock And calves from the midst of the stall;Who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments, And invent for yourselves musical instruments like David;Who drink wine from bowls, And anoint yourselves with the best ointments, But are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles— when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you!Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.

But instead, joy and gladness, Slaying oxen and killing sheep, Eating meat and drinking wine:“ Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

Why should I fear in the days of evil, When the iniquity at my heels surrounds me?Those who trust in their wealth And boast in the multitude of their riches,None of them can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give to God a ransom for him—For the redemption of their souls is costly, And it shall cease forever—That he should continue to live eternally, And not see the Pit.For he sees wise men die; Likewise the fool and the senseless person perish, And leave their wealth to others.Their inner thought is that their houses will last forever, Their dwelling places to all generations; They call their lands after their own names.Nevertheless man, though in honor, does not remain; He is like the beasts that perish.This is the way of those who are foolish, And of their posterity who approve their sayings.
