Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

Come now, you who say,“ Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”—yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.Instead you ought to say,“ If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”

Woe to those who rise early in the morning, that they may run after strong drink, who tarry late into the evening as wine inflames them!

When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven.

“ Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

But God will break you down forever; he will snatch and tear you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. SelahThe righteous shall see and fear, and shall laugh at him, saying,“ See the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and sought refuge in his own destruction!”

Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.

You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.

Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart on them.

As she glorified herself and lived in luxury, so give her a like measure of torment and mourning, since in her heart she says,‘ I sit as a queen, I am no widow, and mourning I shall never see.’

For though, while he lives, he counts himself blessed— and though you get praise when you do well for yourself—

A rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his imagination.

and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant— and when you eat and are full,then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

Woe to those who join house to house, who add field to field, until there is no more room, and you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land.

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.

“ If I have made gold my trust or called fine gold my confidence,if I have rejoiced because my wealth was abundant or because my hand had found much,

treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

“ There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.

but she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives.

O you who put far away the day of disaster and bring near the seat of violence?“ Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory and stretch themselves out on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall,who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp and like David invent for themselves instruments of music,who drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!

For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten.Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days.

and behold, joy and gladness, killing oxen and slaughtering sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine.“ Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”

Ephraim has said,“ Ah, but I am rich; I have found wealth for myself; in all my labors they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”

They send out their little boys like a flock, and their children dance.They sing to the tambourine and the lyre and rejoice to the sound of the pipe.They spend their days in prosperity, and in peace they go down to Sheol.

“ But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.

lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them,and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied,then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery,

Why should I fear in times of trouble, when the iniquity of those who cheat me surrounds me,those who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life,for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice,that he should live on forever and never see the pit.For he sees that even the wise die; the fool and the stupid alike must perish and leave their wealth to others.Their graves are their homes forever, their dwelling places to all generations, though they called lands by their own names.Man in his pomp will not remain; he is like the beasts that perish.This is the path of those who have foolish confidence; yet after them people approve of their boasts.
