“ What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you love to sit in the seats of honor in the synagogues and receive respectful greetings as you walk in the marketplaces.

“ Woe to you Pharisees! You love the front seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.

Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the seat of honor in the synagogues and personal greetings in the marketplaces.

Woe unto you Pharisees! for ye love the chief seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the marketplaces.

“ Woe to you Pharisees! You love the front seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.

Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.

Woe to you Pharisees! You love the best seats in the synagogues and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces!

“ Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts,

Then He said to them in His teaching,“ Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces,the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts,

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.

So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them:“ When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him;and he who invited you and him come and say to you,‘ Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place.But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you,‘ Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you.For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.

For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes,and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him,“ You sit here in a good place,” and say to the poor man,“ You stand there,” or,“ Sit here at my footstool,”have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?

they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called‘ Rabbi’ by others. (niv)
