這樣一位聖潔、沒有邪惡、毫無玷汙、與罪人分開、高過諸天的大祭司，對我們實在是合宜的。

尼尼微人就相信神，並宣告禁食，無論尊貴的或卑微的，都披上麻布。這話語傳到尼尼微王的時候，他從自己的寶座上起來，從身上脫下王袍，披上麻布，坐在灰燼中。然後他頒布諭令，說：「在尼尼微，王和大臣有令：『無論人或牲畜，牛或羊，都不可嘗什麼，不可吃什麼，也不可喝水。人和牲畜都當披上麻布；各人都當迫切地向神呼求，從自己邪惡的道路上、自己手裡的殘暴中轉回。或許神會轉回、施憐憫，從他猛烈的怒氣中轉回，使我們不致滅亡。』」神看到他們所行的——從邪惡的道路上轉回了，神就施憐憫，沒有降下原先所說的要降在他們身上的災禍。這讓約拿極其不高興，於是他就惱火，向耶和華禱告，說：「哦，耶和華啊！難道這不就是我還在本國時所說的那樣嗎？這正是我事先逃往塔爾施的原因，因為我知道：你是有恩惠、有憐憫的神，不輕易發怒，並有豐盛的慈愛，而且是施憐憫不降下災禍的那一位。耶和華啊，現在就求你取走我的性命吧！因為我死了比活著更好。」耶和華說：「你這樣惱火，難道有理嗎？」

神對約拿說：「你因這棵蓖麻就這樣惱火，難道有理嗎？」約拿說：「我惱火得要死，當然有理！」

「起來！到尼尼微大城去，向那城呼喊，因為他們的惡行已經上達我的面前。」約拿卻起來，要避開耶和華的面，逃往塔爾施。他下到約帕，找到一艘去塔爾施的船，付了船費，上了船，要避開耶和華的面，與船上的人往塔爾施去。
