Eight days later, when the baby was circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel even before he was conceived.

When the baby was eight days old, they all came for the circumcision ceremony. They wanted to name him Zechariah, after his father.

But you work on the Sabbath, too, when you obey Moses’ law of circumcision.( Actually, this tradition of circumcision began with the patriarchs, long before the law of Moses.)For if the correct time for circumcising your son falls on the Sabbath, you go ahead and do it so as not to break the law of Moses. So why should you be angry with me for healing a man on the Sabbath?

Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God.

This is what I am trying to say: The agreement God made with Abraham could not be canceled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses. God would be breaking his promise.

When you came to Christ, you were“ circumcised,” but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision— the cutting away of your sinful nature.

Circumcision was a sign that Abraham already had faith and that God had already accepted him and declared him to be righteous— even before he was circumcised. So Abraham is the spiritual father of those who have faith but have not been circumcised. They are counted as righteous because of their faith.And Abraham is also the spiritual father of those who have been circumcised, but only if they have the same kind of faith Abraham had before he was circumcised.

“ The Lord your God will change your heart and the hearts of all your descendants, so that you will love him with all your heart and soul and so you may live!

I’ll say it again. If you are trying to find favor with God by being circumcised, you must obey every regulation in the whole law of Moses.

You must cut off the flesh of your foreskin as a sign of the covenant between me and you.From generation to generation, every male child must be circumcised on the eighth day after his birth. This applies not only to members of your family but also to the servants born in your household and the foreign born servants whom you have purchased.

I was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am a pure blooded citizen of Israel and a member of the tribe of Benjamin— a real Hebrew if there ever was one! I was a member of the Pharisees, who demand the strictest obedience to the Jewish law.
