The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped their music.

Our elders don’t go to the city gate anymore. Our young men have stopped playing their music.

The old men have left the city gate, the young men their music.

The elders no longer sit in the city gates; the young men no longer dance and sing.

The elders have left the city gate, the young men, their music.

The elders have ceased gathering at the gate, And the young men from their music.

Then I will eliminate from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride; for the land will become a site of ruins.

“ But now those who are younger than I mock me, Whose fathers I refused to put with the dogs of my flock.

The elders of the daughter of Zion Sit on the ground and are silent. They have thrown dust on their heads; They have put on sackcloth. The virgins of Jerusalem Have bowed their heads to the ground.

The roads of Zion are in mourning Because no one comes to an appointed feast. All her gates are deserted; Her priests groan, Her virgins are worried, And as for Zion herself, it is bitter for her.

And the sound of harpists, musicians, flute players, and trumpeters will never be heard in you again; and no craftsman of any craft will ever be found in you again; and the sound of a mill will never be heard in you again;

When I went out to the gate of the city, When I took my seat in the public square,The young men saw me and hid themselves, And the old men arose and stood.The leaders stopped talking And put their hands on their mouths;The voices of the prominent people were hushed, And their tongues stuck to their palates.For when an ear heard, it called me blessed, And when an eye saw, it testified in support of me,Because I saved the poor who cried for help, And the orphan who had no helper.The blessing of the one who was about to perish came upon me, And I made the widow’s heart sing for joy.I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; My justice was like a robe and a headband.I was eyes to those who were blind, And feet to those who could not walk.I was a father to the poor, And I investigated the case which I did not know.I broke the jaws of the wicked And rescued the prey from his teeth.

So I will put an end to the sound of your songs, and the sound of your harps will no longer be heard.

The mighty man and the warrior, The judge and the prophet, The diviner and the elder,The captain of fifty and the esteemed person, The counselor and the expert artisan, And the skillful enchanter.

The new wine mourns, The vine decays, All the joyful hearted sigh.The joy of tambourines ceases, The noise of revelers stops, The joy of the harp ceases.They do not drink wine with song; Intoxicating drink is bitter to those who drink it.The city of chaos is broken down; Every house is shut up so that no one may enter.There is an outcry in the streets concerning the wine; All joy turns to gloom. The joy of the earth is banished.

Moreover, I will eliminate from them the voice of jubilation and the voice of joy, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp.

For this is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says:“ Behold, I am going to eliminate from this place, before your eyes and in your time, the voice of rejoicing and the voice of joy, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride.

Therefore my harp is turned to mourning, And my flute to the sound of those who weep.

I called to my lovers, but they deserted me; My priests and my elders perished in the city While they sought food to restore their strength themselves.

“ You shall appoint for yourself judges and officers in all your towns which the Lord your God is giving you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.
