Yahweh, you have persuaded me, and I was persuaded. You are stronger than I, and have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day. Everyone mocks me.

You see their sitting down and their rising up. I am their song.

But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised by the people.All those who see me mock me. They insult me with their lips. They shake their heads, saying,

Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads,and saying,“ You who destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”Likewise the chief priests also mocking, with the scribes, the Pharisees, and the elders, said,“ He saved others, but he can’t save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”The robbers also who were crucified with him cast on him the same reproach.

For there, those who led us captive asked us for songs. Those who tormented us demanded songs of joy:“ Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”

When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards.

We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scoffing and derision to those who are around us.

He spoke before his brothers and the army of Samaria, and said,“ What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, since they are burned?”Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said,“ What they are building, if a fox climbed up it, he would break down their stone wall.”“ Hear, our God; for we are despised. Turn back their reproach on their own head. Give them up for a plunder in a land of captivity.

But in my adversity, they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together. The attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I didn’t know it. They tore at me, and didn’t cease.Like the profane mockers in feasts, they gnashed their teeth at me.

For wasn’t Israel a derision to you? Was he found among thieves? For as often as you speak of him, you shake your head.

“ But now those who are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I considered unworthy to put with my sheep dogs.Of what use is the strength of their hands to me, men in whom ripe age has perished?They are gaunt from lack and famine. They gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of waste and desolation.They pluck salt herbs by the bushes. The roots of the broom tree are their food.They are driven out from among men. They cry after them as after a thief;So that they dwell in frightful valleys, and in holes of the earth and of the rocks.They bray among the bushes. They are gathered together under the nettles.They are children of fools, yes, children of wicked men. They were flogged out of the land.“ Now I have become their song. Yes, I am a byword to them.

Have mercy on us, Yahweh, have mercy on us, for we have endured much contempt.Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scoffing of those who are at ease, with the contempt of the proud.

For, I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last of all, like men sentenced to death. For we are made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and men.We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You have honor, but we have dishonor.Even to this present hour we hunger, thirst, are naked, are beaten, and have no certain dwelling place.We toil, working with our own hands. When people curse us, we bless. Being persecuted, we endure.Being defamed, we entreat. We are made as the filth of the world, the dirt wiped off by all, even until now.

You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a scoffing and a derision to those who are around us.
