噫嘻是邑、昔則居民充盈、今則何其寂寞兮、昔為邦國之長、今如嫠婦兮、昔於諸州為郡主、今則供役兮、

維昔郇邑、居民眾多、今則不勝寂寞兮、昔為大國、今若嫠婦兮、昔也列邦為彼所制、今則為人供役、能勿悲兮。

哀哉斯邑、居民素多、今則寂寞、若嫠婦獨坐、昔於諸國中最大、列邦尊以為后、而今反為人供役、為人供役或作納貢

How deserted lies the city, once so full of people! How like a widow is she, who once was great among the nations! She who was queen among the provinces has now become a slave.

The city of Jerusalem is so empty! She used to be full of people. But now she’s like a woman whose husband has died. She used to be great among the nations. She was like a queen among the kingdoms. But now she is a slave.

How lonely sits the city that was full of people! How like a widow has she become, she who was great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces has become a slave.

Jerusalem, once so full of people, is now deserted. She who was once great among the nations now sits alone like a widow. Once the queen of all the earth, she is now a slave.

How she sits alone, the city once crowded with people! She who was great among the nations has become like a widow. The princess among the provinces has been put to forced labor.

How lonely sits the city That once had many people! She has become like a widow Who was once great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces Has become a forced laborer!

And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she[ being] desolate shall sit upon the ground.

There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all[ countries] beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life.

And Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh; but he taxed the land to give the money according to the commandment of Pharaoh: he exacted the silver and the gold of the people of the land, of every one according to his taxation, to give[ it] unto Pharaohnechoh.

The crown is fallen[ from] our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned!

Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more.

And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,

Thou that art full of stirs, a tumultuous city, a joyous city: thy slain[ men are] not slain with the sword, nor dead in battle.

There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute,[ and that upon] our lands and vineyards.

Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age.And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof.

Shake thyself from the dust; arise,[ and] sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion.

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

And Pharaohnechoh put him in bands at Riblah in the land of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem; and put the land to a tribute of an hundred talents of silver, and a talent of gold.

Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I[ am], and none else beside me.Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly,[ which] thou shalt not know.Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from[ these things] that shall come upon thee.Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame:[ there shall] not[ be] a coal to warm at,[ nor] fire to sit before it.Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured,[ even] thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.

And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.

How is the gold become dim![ how] is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street.

How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!

How hath the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger,[ and] cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel, and remembered not his footstool in the day of his anger!

And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we[ are] in great distress.

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning![ how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

And I will make Jerusalem heaps,[ and] a den of dragons; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.

The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground,[ and] keep silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.

This[ is] the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I[ am], and[ there is] none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss,[ and] wag his hand.

Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and lay away their robes, and put off their broidered garments: they shall clothe themselves with trembling; they shall sit upon the ground, and shall tremble at[ every] moment, and be astonished at thee.

The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.

And he reigned over all the kings from the river even unto the land of the Philistines, and to the border of Egypt.
