For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people[ that were] men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD sware that he would not shew them the land, which the LORD sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.

The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness forty years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord. For the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

The Israelites had moved around in the desert for 40 years. By the end of that time all the men old enough to serve in the army when they left Egypt had died. That’s because they hadn’t obeyed the Lord. He had made a promise to them. He had told them they wouldn’t see the land. It’s the land he had promised to their people to give us. It’s a land that has plenty of milk and honey.

And the space in which we came from Kadeshbarnea, until we were come over the brook Zered,[ was] thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware unto them.

For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God[ hath been] with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.

Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:

And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first[ day] of the month,[ that] Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them;

So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)

Forty years long was I grieved with[ this] generation, and said, It[ is] a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.

And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land[ that was] not sown.

Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.

In the day[ that] I lifted up mine hand unto them, to bring them forth of the land of Egypt into a land that I had espied for them, flowing with milk and honey, which[ is] the glory of all lands:

And I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, unto a land flowing with milk and honey.

Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,Doubtless ye shall not come into the land,[ concerning] which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.But[ as for] you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.After the number of the days in which ye searched the land,[ even] forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities,[ even] forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.

Yet also I lifted up my hand unto them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given[ them], flowing with milk and honey, which[ is] the glory of all lands;

And it shall come to pass in that day,[ that] the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim.
