亞伯蘭穿過那地，到了示劍的地方，摩利的橡樹那裡。當時，迦南人住在那地。

摩西從全體以色列人中選出了有才能的人，立他們作人民的首領，作千夫長、百夫長、五十夫長、十夫長。他們隨時審判人民的案件；有困難的事件，他們就帶到摩西那裡；所有小事件，由他們自己審判。

耶路．巴力的兒子亞比米勒，到示劍去見他的眾母舅，對他們和他母親的全體族人說：“請你們給示劍的眾人說：‘是耶路．巴力的眾子七十人都統治你們好呢？還是一個人統治你們好呢？’你們也要記得我是你們的骨肉。”他的眾母舅就把這一切話為他說給示劍的眾人聽；他們的心都傾向亞比米勒，因為他們說：“他本是我們的親族。”

雅各從巴旦．亞蘭回來的時候，平平安安地到了迦南地的示劍城，在城的對面支搭了帳棚。他支搭帳棚的那塊地，是他用一百塊銀子向示劍的父親哈抹的子孫買來的。

他們就把自己手中所有外族人的神像，和自己耳朵上的環子，都交給雅各；雅各把這些東西埋在示劍附近的橡樹底下。
