So the Israelites sent Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, to the land of Gilead— to Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

The Israelites sent Phinehas the priest to the land of Gilead. Phinehas was the son of Eleazar. They sent him to the tribes of Reuben and Gad and half of the tribe of Manasseh.

Then the people of Israel sent to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,

First, however, they sent a delegation led by Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, to talk with the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh.

祭司亞倫孫以利亞撒子非尼哈見之、即離會眾、手執戈、

亞倫之子以利亞撒、娶普鐵女為妻、生非尼哈、以上所記、皆利未支派諸宗族、按其世系、

非尼哈興起、施行刑罰、瘟疫即息、此事稱為非尼哈之義、至於永遠、

倘兄弟得罪爾、則於彼獨處時責之、若聽、則得爾兄弟、

祭司亞倫孫以利亞撒子非尼哈、在以色列人中為我熱中、致我向以色列人息怒、在我忌邪發怒之時、不以之翦滅、故爾當告非尼哈曰、我必賜之以平康之約、此即立彼與其子孫永為祭司之約、因彼為其天主熱中、為以色列人贖罪、○

以色列人乃遣使遍告於便雅憫支派曰、爾中所行者何惡、

多籌畫、所謀乃成、欲交戰、先設良策、

爾與鄰訟、勿洩他人之密事、恐聽者責爾、貽羞不已、應時之言、如金果嵌於銀槽、智者之警教、在願聽者之耳中、如金耳環、如精金之飾、忠信之使、令遣之之主人暢懷、如穡時得冰雪、既涼且爽、

爾則當詳細咨詢究察訪問、如得其實、果有此可惡之事行於爾中、
