When they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.

The tribes of Reuben and Gad and half of the tribe of Manasseh came to Geliloth. It was near the Jordan River in the land of Canaan. They built a large altar there by the Jordan.

And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of imposing size.

But while they were still in Canaan, and when they came to a place called Geliloth near the Jordan River, the men of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh stopped to build a large and imposing altar.

雅各清早起來，把枕的那塊石頭立成柱子作記號，在上面澆上油。

耶和華把約旦河定為我們跟你們呂便和迦得人的邊界，你們與耶和華一點關係也沒有。』這樣，恐怕你們的子孫會使我們的子孫不再敬畏耶和華。因此，我們便商議在這裡築一座祭壇，這壇不是用來獻燔祭或別的祭，只是在你們和我們之間，也在彼此的後人之間立個證據，證明我們也獻燔祭、平安祭及其他祭事奉耶和華，免得日後你們的子孫對我們的子孫說，『你們與耶和華一點關係也沒有。』萬一你們對我們或我們的子孫這樣說，我們可以回答說，『你們看我們祖先築的這座祭壇跟耶和華的祭壇一模一樣，只是這座壇不是用來獻燔祭或別的祭，而是作為你們和我們之間的證據！』

又吩咐族人去收集石頭。他們把石頭堆成一堆，在旁邊吃喝。拉班稱那石堆為伊迦爾·撒哈杜他，雅各卻稱那石堆為迦累得。拉班說：「今日，這石堆是你我之間的憑證。」因此，那地方名叫迦累得，又叫米斯巴，因為拉班說：「我們分手以後，願上帝親自鑒察我們。倘若你虐待我的女兒，或在她們以外另娶妻子，即使沒人知道，也有上帝在你我之間做見證。」拉班又說：「看我在你我之間立的這石堆和石柱。這石堆和石柱都是憑證，我一定不會越過石堆去害你，你也不可越過石堆和石柱來害我。

「你們到約旦河床你們的上帝耶和華的約櫃前面，每人扛一塊石頭回來，每個支派一塊，一共十二塊。這些石頭要在你們中間作記號。以後，倘若你們的子孫問你們，『這些石頭是什麼意思？』你們就告訴他們，『約旦河水在耶和華的約櫃前曾經被截斷，當約櫃過河的時候，河水被截斷了。這些石頭要在以色列人當中作為永久的紀念。』」以色列人就照約書亞的吩咐，也就是照耶和華對約書亞的吩咐，按以色列人支派的數目，從約旦河中取了十二塊石頭，搬來放在住宿的地方。約書亞又在約旦河床抬約櫃的祭司站立的地方立了十二塊石頭。石頭至今還在那裡。
