耶路·巴力的兒子亞比米勒去示劍的舅舅家，對外祖父全家說：

當地首領希未人哈抹的兒子示劍看到她，就抓住她，強行玷污了她。

以色列人把從埃及帶出來的約瑟的骸骨葬在示劍，在從前雅各用一百塊銀子向哈抹的子孫買的那塊地裡。哈抹是示劍的父親。後來那塊地成了約瑟子孫的產業。

約瑟的哥哥們到示劍放父親的羊。

於是，民眾便設立拿弗他利山區加利利境內的基低斯、以法蓮山區的示劍和猶大山區的基列·亞巴，即希伯崙作為避難城。

耶羅波安在以法蓮山區修建示劍城，住在那裡。他後來又去修建毗努伊勒。

地中海，又向北至密米他，然後向東繞到他納·示羅，到雅挪哈東部，再到亞他綠、拿拉，經耶利哥直到約旦河；又從他普亞往西到加拿河，直到地中海。這就是以法蓮的子孫按宗族所分的產業。

約書亞在示劍招聚以色列各支派，然後召來以色列的長老、族長、審判官和官長。他們一同站在上帝面前。

以色列說：「你去看看你哥哥們以及羊群是否平安，然後回來告訴我。」於是，約瑟就從希伯崙谷出發去示劍。
