That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors. And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.

Your hand will lay hold on all your enemies; your right hand will seize your foes.When you appear for battle, you will burn them up as in a blazing furnace. The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath, and his fire will consume them. (niv)

However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes.Completely destroy them— the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites— as the Lord your God has commanded you. (niv)
