Now Adoni- Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and had become their allies.

Adoni- Zedek was the king of Jerusalem. He heard that Joshua had captured Ai. He found out that the city had been set apart to the Lord in a special way to be destroyed. He heard that Joshua had done to Ai and its king the same thing he had done to Jericho and its king. Adoni- Zedek heard that the people of Gibeon had made a peace treaty with Israel. He also found out that they were living among the Israelites.

As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,

Adoni zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard that Joshua had captured and completely destroyed Ai and killed its king, just as he had destroyed the town of Jericho and killed its king. He also learned that the Gibeonites had made peace with Israel and were now their allies.

他們把城中的一切，無論男女老幼、牛羊和驢，都用刀殺盡。

撒冷王麥基洗德也帶著餅和酒出來；他是至高神的祭司。

伏兵也出城攻擊艾城的人；艾城的人就被困在以色列人中間，前後受敵；於是以色列人把他們擊殺，沒有留下一個，也沒有一個逃脫。他們活捉了艾城的王，把他解到約書亞那裡。以色列人在田間、在曠野，殺盡了所有追趕他們的艾城的居民，艾城的人全部倒在刀下，直到完全消滅；接著，以色列眾人回到艾城，用刀擊殺了城中的人。那一天被殺的人，連男帶女，共有一萬二千人，就是艾城所有的人。約書亞沒有收回伸出短槍的手，直到把艾城的居民都消滅為止。只有那城裡的牲畜和戰利品，以色列人照著耶和華吩咐約書亞的話，都據為己有。約書亞燒了艾城，使城永遠成為廢堆，一片荒涼，直到今日。他又把艾城的王懸在樹上，直到黃昏的時候；日落的時候，約書亞吩咐人把屍體從樹上拿下來，丟在城門口那裡，又在屍體上堆起了一大堆石頭，這堆石頭一直存到今日。

你怎樣對待耶利哥和耶利哥的王，也要照樣對待艾城和艾城的王；只是城中的戰利品和牲畜，你們可以據為己有；你要在城後面設下攻城的伏兵。”

除了住在基遍的希未人以外，沒有一座城與以色列人議和的；所有其他的城都是以色列人作戰奪取的。因為這是出於耶和華的旨意，他使他們心裡剛硬，要與以色列人交戰，好把他們完全毀滅，使他們不蒙憐憫，卻要被消滅，正如耶和華吩咐摩西的。

於是約書亞與他們議和，和他們立約，容他們存活；會眾的首領也向他們起了誓。以色列人和他們立約之後，過了三天，才聽見他們是自己的近鄰，是住在這地的居民。於是，以色列人起程，第三日就到了他們的城市；他們的城市就是基遍、基非拉、比錄、基列．耶琳。以色列人沒有擊殺他們，因為會眾的首領曾經指著耶和華以色列的神向他們起了誓，全體會眾就都向首領發怨言。眾首領對全體會眾說：“我們曾經指著耶和華以色列的神向他們起了誓，現在我們不能傷害他們。我們要這樣待他們，就是容他們存活，免得神的忿怒因我們向他們所起的誓，臨到我們身上。”眾首領又對會眾說：“要讓他們存活。”於是他們就給全體會眾作了劈柴打水的人，這是按照眾首領對他們的吩咐。約書亞把他們召了來，質問他們：“你們為甚麼欺騙我們說：‘我們離你們很遠’，其實你們卻是住在這地的？現在你們要受到咒詛，你們中間必不斷有人作奴僕，為我神的聖所作劈柴打水的人。”他們回答約書亞，說：“因為你的僕人確實地聽見，耶和華你的神曾經吩咐他的僕人摩西，要把這整片土地賜給你們，並且要在你們面前把這地上所有的居民都消滅，因此，我們因你們的緣故，很怕喪命，才行了這事。現在，你看，我們都在你的手裡，你看怎樣處置我們算為好、算為對，就怎樣行吧。”約書亞就這樣處置他們，救了他們脫離以色列人的手，以色列人就沒有殺他們。在那一天，約書亞指派他們在耶和華選擇的地方，為會眾和耶和華的祭壇作劈柴打水的人，直到今日。

這麥基洗德就是撒冷王，又是至高神的祭司。亞伯拉罕殺敗眾王回來的時候，麥基洗德迎接他，並且給他祝福。
