To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit.

I sank down to the bottom of the mountains. I thought I had died and gone down into the grave forever. But you are the Lord my God. You brought my life up from the very edge of the pit of death.

“ Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.Who determined its measurements— surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone,when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?“ Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb,when I made clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band,and prescribed limits for it and set bars and doors,and said,‘ Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed’?

For a fire is kindled by my anger, and it burns to the depths of Sheol, devours the earth and its increase, and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

He stood and measured the earth; he looked and shook the nations; then the eternal mountains were scattered; the everlasting hills sank low. His were the everlasting ways.

You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains.

The mountains saw you and writhed; the raging waters swept on; the deep gave forth its voice; it lifted its hands on high.

He has redeemed my soul from going down into the pit, and my life shall look upon the light.’
