又謂之曰、我當何以待爾、使海為我而恬靜乎、因海久而愈盪、

又曰、今海震盪愈甚、當若何待爾、則風浪可息。

又曰、今海之波濤洶湧已甚、當若何待爾、使海恬靜乎、

Because the storm was growing worse and worse, they said to him,“ What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”

Then they said to him,“ What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.

Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David inquired of the Lord. And the Lord answered,“ It is because of Saul and his bloodthirsty house, because he killed the Gibeonites.”So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; the children of Israel had sworn protection to them, but Saul had sought to kill them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah.Therefore David said to the Gibeonites,“ What shall I do for you? And with what shall I make atonement, that you may bless the inheritance of the Lord?”And the Gibeonites said to him,“ We will have no silver or gold from Saul or from his house, nor shall you kill any man in Israel for us.” So he said,“ Whatever you say, I will do for you.”Then they answered the king,“ As for the man who consumed us and plotted against us, that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the territories of Israel,let seven men of his descendants be delivered to us, and we will hang them before the Lord in Gibeah of Saul, whom the Lord chose.” And the king said,“ I will give them.”

Now when David arose in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,“ Go and tell David,‘ Thus says the Lord:“ I offer you three things; choose one of them for yourself, that I may do it to you.”’”So Gad came to David and told him; and he said to him,“ Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or shall you flee three months before your enemies, while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ plague in your land? Now consider and see what answer I should take back to Him who sent me.”

With what shall I come before the Lord, And bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, With calves a year old?Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, Ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying,“ What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it to its place.”So they said,“ If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it empty; but by all means return it to Him with a trespass offering. Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why His hand is not removed from you.”
