Now Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

Jeroboam, the son of Jehoash, made the borders of Israel the same as they were before. They reached from Lebo Hamath all the way to the Dead Sea. That’s what the Lord, the God of Israel, had said would happen. He had spoken that message through his servant Jonah. Jonah the prophet was the son of Amittai. Jonah was from the town of Gath Hepher.

As the crowds grew larger, Jesus spoke to them.“ The people of today are evil,” he said.“ They ask for a sign from God. But none will be given except the sign of Jonah.He was a sign from God to the people of Nineveh. In the same way, the Son of Man will be a sign from God to the people of today.

The men of Nineveh will stand up on judgment day with the people now living. And the Ninevites will prove that those people are guilty. The men of Nineveh turned away from their sins when Jonah preached to them. And now something more important than Jonah is here.

An evil and unfaithful people look for a sign. But none will be given to them except the sign of Jonah.” Then Jesus left them and went away.

He answered,“ Evil and unfaithful people ask for a sign! But none will be given except the sign of the prophet Jonah.Jonah was in the belly of a huge fish for three days and three nights. Something like that will happen to the Son of Man. He will spend three days and three nights in the grave.The men of Nineveh will stand up on judgment day with the people now living.
