Submit therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you.Come close to God and He will come close to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double minded.Be miserable, and mourn, and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into gloom.Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

Is it a fast like this that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself? Is it for bowing one’s head like a reed And for spreading out sackcloth and ashes as a bed? Will you call this a fast, even an acceptable day to the Lord?

Then You would plunge me into the pit, And my own clothes would loathe me.

Then you will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves in your own sight for your wrongdoings and your abominations.

When Mordecai learned of everything that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city and wailed loudly and bitterly.And he came as far as the king’s gate, for no one was to enter the king’s gate clothed in sackcloth.In each and every province where the command and decree of the king came, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping, and mourning rites; and many had sackcloth and ashes spread out as a bed.
