because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—

因惧怕大众，又因宗族藐视我使我惊恐，以致闭口无言，杜门不出；

我若因大大惧怕众人，又因宗族的藐视而恐惧，以致我缄默不言，闭门不出；

我若因大大惧怕众人，又因宗族的藐视而恐惧，以致我缄默不言，闭门不出；

因惧怕群众，被族人藐视，就默不作声、不敢出门？

因为我惧怕群众，宗族的藐视又使我惊恐，以致我静默不言，足不出门。

因懼怕蜂擁的眾人，又因宗族的藐視驚嚇我，以致我靜止不動，閉門不出；

因畏大眾、懼宗族之藐視、以致緘口、杜門不出、

如我若此、則必戰慄於眾前、為戚族所藐視、緘口無詞、杜門不出。

如我有此、自思大眾必驚恐我、宗族必藐視我、凌辱我、使我蒙羞緘口、不敢出門、

because I so feared the crowd and so dreaded the contempt of the clans that I kept silent and would not go outside—

I was never afraid of the crowd. I never worried that my relatives might hate me. I didn’t have to keep quiet or stay inside.

because I stood in great fear of the multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and did not go out of doors—

Have I feared the crowd or the contempt of the masses, so that I kept quiet and stayed indoors?

because I greatly feared the crowds and because the contempt of the clans terrified me, so I grew silent and would not go outside?

Because I feared the great multitude And the contempt of families terrified me, And I kept silent and did not go out of doors?

Because I feared the great multitude, And dreaded the contempt of families, So that I kept silence And did not go out of the door—

Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence,[ and] went not out of the door?

because I was terrified of the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I remained silent and would not go outdoors–

“ You shall not follow a crowd to do evil. You shall not testify in court to side with a multitude to pervert justice.

So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying,“ As Yahweh lives, who made us this soul, I will not put you to death, neither will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life.”

Therefore, because you trample on the poor, and take taxes from him of wheat: You have built houses of cut stone, but you will not dwell in them. You have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.For I know how many your offenses, and how great are your sins— you who afflict the just, who take a bribe, and who turn away the needy in the courts.Therefore a prudent person keeps silent in such a time, for it is an evil time.

One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son- in- law to Sanballat the Horonite; therefore I chased him from me.

But as for the mighty man, he had the earth. The honorable man, he lived in it.

Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes to ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.But the governor answered them,“ Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They said,“ Barabbas!”Pilate said to them,“ What then shall I do to Jesus, who is called Christ?” They all said to him,“ Let him be crucified!”But the governor said,“ Why? What evil has he done?” But they cried out exceedingly, saying,“ Let him be crucified!”So when Pilate saw that nothing was being gained, but rather that a disturbance was starting, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying,“ I am innocent of the blood of this righteous person. You see to it.”All the people answered,“ May his blood be on us, and on our children!”Then he released to them Barabbas, but Jesus he flogged and delivered to be crucified.

Therefore we know no one after the flesh from now on. Even though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now we know him so no more.

Then the princes said to the king,“ Please let this man be put to death; because he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them: for this man doesn’t seek the welfare of this people, but harm.”Zedekiah the king said,“ Behold, he is in your hand; for the king can’t do anything to oppose you.”

He said to them,“ Yahweh, the God of Israel, says,‘ Every man put his sword on his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp, and every man kill his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.’”

Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the rooms of the house of our God, being allied to Tobiah,had prepared for him a great room, where before they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, the singers, and the gatekeepers; and the wave offerings for the priests.But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the thirty- second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king; and after some days I asked leave of the king,and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a room in the courts of God’s house.It grieved me severely. Therefore I threw all Tobiah’s household stuff out of the room.

Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah,“ I am afraid of the Jews who have defected to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.”

The fear of man proves to be a snare, but whoever puts his trust in Yahweh is kept safe.

“ All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, know, that whoever, whether man or woman, comes to the king into the inner court without being called, there is one law for him, that he be put to death, except those to whom the king might hold out the golden scepter, that he may live. I have not been called to come in to the king these thirty days.”

He doesn’t respect the persons of princes, nor respect the rich more than the poor; for they all are the work of his hands.

Their hands are on that which is evil to do it diligently. The ruler and judge ask for a bribe; and the powerful man dictates the evil desire of his soul. Thus they conspire together.

Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said to them,“ You exact usury, everyone of his brother.” I held a great assembly against them.

Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites.The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur. He was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.

Rescue those who are being led away to death! Indeed, hold back those who are staggering to the slaughter!If you say,“ Behold, we didn’t know this,” doesn’t he who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, doesn’t he know it? Shall he not render to every man according to his work?

For if you remain silent now, then relief and deliverance will come to the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Who knows if you haven’t come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
