Because I feared the great multitude, And dreaded the contempt of families, So that I kept silence And did not go out of the door—

因惧怕大众，又因宗族藐视我使我惊恐，以致闭口无言，杜门不出；

我若因大大惧怕众人，又因宗族的藐视而恐惧，以致我缄默不言，闭门不出；

我若因大大惧怕众人，又因宗族的藐视而恐惧，以致我缄默不言，闭门不出；

因惧怕群众，被族人藐视，就默不作声、不敢出门？

因为我惧怕群众，宗族的藐视又使我惊恐，以致我静默不言，足不出门。

因懼怕蜂擁的眾人，又因宗族的藐視驚嚇我，以致我靜止不動，閉門不出；

因畏大眾、懼宗族之藐視、以致緘口、杜門不出、

如我若此、則必戰慄於眾前、為戚族所藐視、緘口無詞、杜門不出。

如我有此、自思大眾必驚恐我、宗族必藐視我、凌辱我、使我蒙羞緘口、不敢出門、

because I so feared the crowd and so dreaded the contempt of the clans that I kept silent and would not go outside—

I was never afraid of the crowd. I never worried that my relatives might hate me. I didn’t have to keep quiet or stay inside.

because I stood in great fear of the multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and did not go out of doors—

Have I feared the crowd or the contempt of the masses, so that I kept quiet and stayed indoors?

because I greatly feared the crowds and because the contempt of the clans terrified me, so I grew silent and would not go outside?

Because I feared the great multitude And the contempt of families terrified me, And I kept silent and did not go out of doors?

You shall not follow a crowd to do evil; nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice.

So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying,“ As the Lord lives, who made our very souls, I will not put you to death, nor will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life.”

Therefore, because you tread down the poor And take grain taxes from him, Though you have built houses of hewn stone, Yet you shall not dwell in them; You have planted pleasant vineyards, But you shall not drink wine from them.For I know your manifold transgressions And your mighty sins: Afflicting the just and taking bribes; Diverting the poor from justice at the gate.Therefore the prudent keep silent at that time, For it is an evil time.

And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite; therefore I drove him from me.

But the mighty man possessed the land, And the honorable man dwelt in it.

But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.The governor answered and said to them,“ Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They said,“ Barabbas!”Pilate said to them,“ What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said to him,“ Let Him be crucified!”Then the governor said,“ Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, saying,“ Let Him be crucified!”When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying,“ I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it.”And all the people answered and said,“ His blood be on us and on our children.”Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.

Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer.

Therefore the princes said to the king,“ Please, let this man be put to death, for thus he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man does not seek the welfare of this people, but their harm.”Then Zedekiah the king said,“ Look, he is in your hand. For the king can do nothing against you.”

And he said to them,“ Thus says the Lord God of Israel:‘ Let every man put his sword on his side, and go in and out from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and let every man kill his brother, every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.’”

Now before this, Eliashib the priest, having authority over the storerooms of the house of our God, was allied with Tobiah.And he had prepared for him a large room, where previously they had stored the grain offerings, the frankincense, the articles, the tithes of grain, the new wine and oil, which were commanded to be given to the Levites and singers and gatekeepers, and the offerings for the priests.But during all this I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Then after certain days I obtained leave from the king,and I came to Jerusalem and discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing a room for him in the courts of the house of God.And it grieved me bitterly; therefore I threw all the household goods of Tobiah out of the room.

And Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah,“ I am afraid of the Jews who have defected to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they abuse me.”

The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.

“ All the king’s servants and the people of the king’s provinces know that any man or woman who goes into the inner court to the king, who has not been called, he has but one law: put all to death, except the one to whom the king holds out the golden scepter, that he may live. Yet I myself have not been called to go in to the king these thirty days.”

Yet He is not partial to princes, Nor does He regard the rich more than the poor; For they are all the work of His hands.

That they may successfully do evil with both hands— The prince asks for gifts, The judge seeks a bribe, And the great man utters his evil desire; So they scheme together.

After serious thought, I rebuked the nobles and rulers, and said to them,“ Each of you is exacting usury from his brother.” So I called a great assembly against them.

Now the name of the Israelite who was killed, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father’s house among the Simeonites.And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a father’s house in Midian.

Deliver those who are drawn toward death, And hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.If you say,“ Surely we did not know this,” Does not He who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, does He not know it? And will He not render to each man according to his deeds?

For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
