They may be allowed to live in security, but God is always watching them.

He may let them rest in a feeling of security, but his eyes are on their ways.

God might let them rest and feel secure. But his eyes see how they live.

He gives them security, and they are supported, and his eyes are upon their ways.

He gives them a sense of security, so they can rely on it, but his eyes watch over their ways.

The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping his eye on both the evil and the good.

I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am the one who searches out the thoughts and intentions of every person. And I will give to each of you whatever you deserve.

But the Lord is in his holy Temple; the Lord still rules from heaven. He watches everyone closely, examining every person on earth.The Lord examines both the righteous and the wicked. He hates those who love violence.

Now the Lord has sworn this oath by his own name, the Pride of Israel:“ I will never forget the wicked things you have done!

When a crime is not punished quickly, people feel it is safe to do wrong.

For the Lord sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes.

For I envied the proud when I saw them prosper despite their wickedness.They seem to live such painless lives; their bodies are so healthy and strong.They don’t have troubles like other people; they’re not plagued with problems like everyone else.They wear pride like a jeweled necklace and clothe themselves with cruelty.These fat cats have everything their hearts could ever wish for!They scoff and speak only evil; in their pride they seek to crush others.They boast against the very heavens, and their words strut throughout the earth.And so the people are dismayed and confused, drinking in all their words.“ What does God know?” they ask.“ Does the Most High even know what’s happening?”Look at these wicked people— enjoying a life of ease while their riches multiply.

Lord, you always give me justice when I bring a case before you. So let me bring you this complaint: Why are the wicked so prosperous? Why are evil people so happy?You have planted them, and they have taken root and prospered. Your name is on their lips, but you are far from their hearts.But as for me, Lord, you know my heart. You see me and test my thoughts. Drag these people away like sheep to be butchered! Set them aside to be slaughtered!

If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat. If they are thirsty, give them water to drink.You will heap burning coals of shame on their heads, and the Lord will reward you.As surely as a north wind brings rain, so a gossiping tongue causes anger!

But what if the servant thinks,‘ My master won’t be back for a while,’ and he begins beating the other servants, partying, and getting drunk?

But robbers are left in peace, and those who provoke God live in safety— though God keeps them in his power.

Why do the wicked get away with despising God? They think,“ God will never call us to account.”But you see the trouble and grief they cause. You take note of it and punish them. The helpless put their trust in you. You defend the orphans.

Don’t be surprised if you see a poor person being oppressed by the powerful and if justice is being miscarried throughout the land. For every official is under orders from higher up, and matters of justice get lost in red tape and bureaucracy.

But you are pure and cannot stand the sight of evil. Will you wink at their treachery? Should you be silent while the wicked swallow up people more righteous than they?

For he knows those who are false, and he takes note of all their sins.

He will say,‘ Each of my princes will soon be a king.We destroyed Calno just as we did Carchemish. Hamath fell before us as Arpad did. And we destroyed Samaria just as we did Damascus.Yes, we have finished off many a kingdom whose gods were greater than those in Jerusalem and Samaria.So we will defeat Jerusalem and her gods, just as we destroyed Samaria with hers.’”

Then he told them a story:“ A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops.He said to himself,‘ What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’Then he said,‘ I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods.And I’ll sit back and say to myself,“ My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’“ But God said to him,‘ You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’

When people are saying,“ Everything is peaceful and secure,” then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.

“ Even if they dig down to the place of the dead, I will reach down and pull them up. Even if they climb up into the heavens, I will bring them down.

“ Come,” they say,“ let’s get some wine and have a party. Let’s all get drunk. Then tomorrow we’ll do it again and have an even bigger party!”
