Turn away before I go to the place I can’t return from. It’s the land of gloom and total darkness.

before I go to the place of no return, to the land of gloom and utter darkness,

before I go— and I shall not return— to the land of darkness and deep shadow,

before I leave— never to return— for the land of darkness and utter gloom.

May gloom and total darkness take it back. May a cloud settle over it. May blackness cover it up.

But now he’s dead. So why should I continue to go without food? Can I bring him back to life again? Someday I’ll go to him. But he won’t return to me.”

“ Only a few years will pass by. Then I’ll take the path of no return.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid. You are with me. Your shepherd’s rod and staff comfort me.

No man is like that. When he dies, he is buried in a grave. He takes his last breath. Then he is gone.Water dries up from lakes. Riverbeds become empty and dry.In the same way, people lie down and never get up. People won’t wake or rise from their sleep until the heavens are gone.“ I wish you would hide me in a grave! I wish you would cover me up until your anger passes by! I wish you would set the time for me to spend in the grave and then bring me back up!If someone dies, will they live again? All the days of my hard work I will wait for the time when you give me new life.

The eyes that see me now won’t see me anymore. You will look for me. But I’ll be gone.When a cloud disappears, it’s gone forever. And anyone who goes down to the grave never returns.He never comes home again. Even his own family doesn’t remember him.

If all of that hadn’t happened, I would be lying down in peace. I’d be asleep and at rest in the grave.

All of us must die. We are like water spilled on the ground. It can’t be put back into the jar. But that is not what God desires. Instead, he finds a way to bring back anyone who was driven away from him.

Do those who are dead speak about your love? Do those who are in the grave tell how faithful you are?Are your wonderful deeds known in that dark place? Are your holy acts known in that land where the dead are forgotten?

I said,“ Lord, I’ll never see you again while I’m still alive. I’ll never see people anymore. I’ll never again be with those who live in this world.

It’s as if you have put me deep down in the grave. It’s as if you have put me in that deep, dark place.

They did not ask,‘ Where is the Lord? He brought us up out of Egypt. He led us through a dry and empty land. He guided us through deserts and deep valleys. It was a land of total darkness where there wasn’t any rain. No one lived or traveled there.’
