每逢这节期，总督有一个惯例，就是给群众释放一个他们要求释放的囚犯。那时，有个声名狼藉的囚犯，名叫耶数．巴拉巴。群众聚集的时候，彼拉多问他们：“你们要我给你们释放谁？耶数．巴拉巴或是称为基督的耶稣呢？”他知道他们是因为嫉妒才把耶稣交了来。

祭司长和长老怂恿群众，叫他们去要求释放巴拉巴，除掉耶稣。总督问他们：“这两个人，你们要我给你们释放哪一个？”他们说：“巴拉巴！”彼拉多对他们说：“那么，我怎样处置那称为基督的耶稣呢？”他们齐声说：“把他钉十字架！”彼拉多说：“为什么呢？他作了什么恶事呢？”众人更加大声喊叫：“把他钉十字架！”

每逢这节期，彼拉多按着众人所要求的，照例给他们释放一个囚犯。有一个人名叫巴拉巴，和作乱的人囚禁在一起，他们作乱的时候，曾杀过人。群众上去，要求彼拉多援例给他们办理。彼拉多回答他们：“你们要我给你们释放这个犹太人的王吗？”他知道祭司长是因为嫉妒才把耶稣交了来。祭司长却煽动群众，宁可要总督释放巴拉巴给他们。彼拉多又对他们说：“那么，你们称为犹太人的王的，你们要我怎样处置他呢？”他们就喊着说：“把他钉十字架！”彼拉多说：“他作了什么恶事呢？”众人却更加大声喊叫：“把他钉十字架！”

我要责打他，然后把他释放。”（有些抄本有第17节：“每逢节期，他必须照例给他们释放一个囚犯。”也有些抄本把这句放在第19节后）
