And Abel also presented an offering— some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. The LORD had regard for Abel and his offering,but he did not have regard for Cain and his offering. Cain was furious, and he looked despondent.Then the LORD said to Cain,“ Why are you furious? And why do you look despondent?If you do what is right, won’t you be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”Cain said to his brother Abel,“ Let’s go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.Then the LORD said to Cain,“ Where is your brother Abel?”“ I don’t know,” he replied.“ Am I my brother’s guardian?”Then he said,“ What have you done? Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground!

“ But he told him,‘ If they don’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’”

Then Herod, when he realized that he had been outwitted by the wise men, flew into a rage. He gave orders to massacre all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, in keeping with the time he had learned from the wise men.

This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: there is one fate for everyone. In addition, the hearts of people are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live; after that they go to the dead.

So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and told him,“ This is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may worship me.

Would you really challenge my justice? Would you declare me guilty to justify yourself?Do you have an arm like God’s? Can you thunder with a voice like his?

When King Herod heard this, he was deeply disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.So he assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Messiah would be born.“ In Bethlehem of Judea,” they told him,“ because this is what was written by the prophet:And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah: Because out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.”Then Herod secretly summoned the wise men and asked them the exact time the star appeared.He sent them to Bethlehem and said,“ Go and search carefully for the child. When you find him, report back to me so that I too can go and worship him.”

He was driven away from people, his mind was like an animal’s, he lived with the wild donkeys, he was fed grass like cattle, and his body was drenched with dew from the sky until he acknowledged that the Most High God is ruler over human kingdoms and sets anyone he wants over them.“ But you his successor, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, even though you knew all this.Instead, you have exalted yourself against the Lord of the heavens. The vessels from his house were brought to you, and as you and your nobles, wives, and concubines drank wine from them, you praised the gods made of silver and gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or understand. But you have not glorified the God who holds your life-breath in his hand and who controls the whole course of your life.

So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and were saying,“ What are we going to do since this man is doing many signs?If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”One of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them,“ You know nothing at all!You’re not considering that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish.”He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,and not for the nation only, but also to unite the scattered children of God.So from that day on they plotted to kill him.

The chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it so that they could arrest him.

For he has stretched out his hand against God and has arrogantly opposed the Almighty.He rushes headlong at him with his thick, studded shields.
