But the Pharisees said,“ He can cast out demons because he is empowered by the prince of demons.”

But just as Paul started to make his defense, Gallio turned to Paul’s accusers and said,“ Listen, you Jews, if this were a case involving some wrongdoing or a serious crime, I would have a reason to accept your case.But since it is merely a question of words and names and your Jewish law, take care of it yourselves. I refuse to judge such matters.”

Then they cursed him and said,“ You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses!We know God spoke to Moses, but we don’t even know where this man comes from.”

Unjustly condemned, he was led away. No one cared that he died without descendants, that his life was cut short in midstream. But he was struck down for the rebellion of my people.

Suddenly, Festus shouted,“ Paul, you are insane. Too much study has made you crazy!”

“ We have never heard anyone speak like this!” the guards responded.“ Have you been led astray, too?” the Pharisees mocked.“ Is there a single one of us rulers or Pharisees who believes in him?This foolish crowd follows him, but they are ignorant of the law. God’s curse is on them!”Then Nicodemus, the leader who had met with Jesus earlier, spoke up.“ Is it legal to convict a man before he is given a hearing?” he asked.They replied,“ Are you from Galilee, too? Search the Scriptures and see for yourself— no prophet ever comes from Galilee!”[ The most ancient Greek manuscripts do not include John 7:53–8:11.]

Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I, the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons, the members of my household will be called by even worse names!
