For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:

For when I brought your ancestors out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices,

For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

And Samuel said, Hath the LORD[ as great] delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey[ is] better than sacrifice,[ and] to hearken than the fat of rams.

But go ye and learn what[ that] meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.

For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give[ it]: thou delightest not in burnt offering.The sacrifices of God[ are] a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings,[ to have been] continually before me.I will take no bullock out of thy house,[ nor] he goats out of thy folds.For every beast of the forest[ is] mine,[ and] the cattle upon a thousand hills.I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field[ are] mine.If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world[ is] mine, and the fulness thereof.Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or[ that] thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.

And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love[ his] neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
