Put on sackcloth, my people, and roll in ashes; mourn with bitter wailing as for an only son, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.

My people, put on the clothes of sadness. Roll among the ashes. Mourn with bitter weeping just as you would mourn for an only son. The one who is going to destroy us will come suddenly.

O daughter of my people, put on sackcloth, and roll in ashes; make mourning as for an only son, most bitter lamentation, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.

Oh, my people, dress yourselves in burlap and sit among the ashes. Mourn and weep bitterly, as for the loss of an only son. For suddenly the destroying armies will be upon you!

My dear people, dress yourselves in sackcloth and roll in the dust. Mourn as you would for an only son, a bitter lament, for suddenly the destroyer will come on us.

Daughter of my people, put on sackcloth And roll in ashes; Mourn as for an only son, A most bitter mourning. For suddenly the destroyer Will come against us.

O daughter of my people, Dress in sackcloth And roll about in ashes! Make mourning as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; For the plunderer will suddenly come upon us.

O daughter of my people, gird thee with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; for the destroyer shall suddenly come upon us.

My dear people, dress yourselves in sackcloth and roll in the dust. Mourn as you would for an only son, a bitter lament, for suddenly the destroyer will come on us.

So I said,“ Oh, my dear people, put on sackcloth and roll in ashes. Mourn with painful sobs as though you had lost your only child. For any moment now that destructive army will come against us.”

Daughter of my people, clothe yourself with sackcloth, and wallow in ashes! Mourn, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation, for the destroyer will suddenly come on us.

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for[ his] only[ son], and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for[ his] firstborn.

For this gird you with sackcloth, lament and howl: for the fierce anger of the LORD is not turned back from us.

And shall cause their voice to be heard against thee, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust upon their heads, they shall wallow themselves in the ashes:And they shall make themselves utterly bald for thee, and gird them with sackcloth, and they shall weep for thee with bitterness of heart[ and] bitter wailing.

The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children: they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people.

For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her.

The spoilers are come upon all high places through the wilderness: for the sword of the LORD shall devour from the[ one] end of the land even to the[ other] end of the land: no flesh shall have peace.

But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for[ your] pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD’S flock is carried away captive.

Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.

Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow.

For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me.[ Is there] no balm in Gilead;[ is there] no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from[ one] end of the earth even unto the[ other] end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.Howl, ye shepherds, and cry; and wallow yourselves[ in the ashes], ye principal of the flock: for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished; and ye shall fall like a pleasant vessel.

Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled: suddenly are my tents spoiled,[ and] my curtains in a moment.

And in that day did the Lord GOD of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth:

They have healed also the hurt[ of the daughter] of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when[ there is] no peace.

Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.

Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people[ is become] cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.

And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only[ son], and the end thereof as a bitter day.

Go to now,[ ye] rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon[ you].

For these[ things] I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.

Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people.

Therefore I will wail and howl, I will go stripped and naked: I will make a wailing like the dragons, and mourning as the owls.For her wound[ is] incurable; for it is come unto Judah; he is come unto the gate of my people,[ even] to Jerusalem.Declare ye[ it] not at Gath, weep ye not at all: in the house of Aphrah roll thyself in the dust.

Their widows are increased to me above the sand of the seas: I have brought upon them against the mother of the young men a spoiler at noonday: I have caused[ him] to fall upon it suddenly, and terrors upon the city.

Therefore said I, Look away from me; I will weep bitterly, labour not to comfort me, because of the spoiling of the daughter of my people.

She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears[ are] on her cheeks: among all her lovers she hath none to comfort[ her]: all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies.

At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse,

Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country:[ Is] not the LORD in Zion?[ is] not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images,[ and] with strange vanities?

Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones: strip you, and make you bare, and gird[ sackcloth] upon[ your] loins.

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for cunning[ women], that they may come:And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters.For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we spoiled! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast[ us] out.Yet hear the word of the LORD, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation.For death is come up into our windows,[ and] is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from without,[ and] the young men from the streets.Speak, Thus saith the LORD, Even the carcases of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman, and none shall gather[ them].

Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.

For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through[ them]; neither can[ men] hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled; they are gone.

But they that escape of them shall escape, and shall be on the mountains like doves of the valleys, all of them mourning, every one for his iniquity.All hands shall be feeble, and all knees shall be weak[ as] water.They shall also gird[ themselves] with sackcloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame[ shall be] upon all faces, and baldness upon all their heads.

Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and[ your] joy to heaviness.
