There at Riblah, in the land of Hamath, the king had them executed. So Judah went into captivity, away from her land.

I will make them objects of horror and hissing scorn.I will put an end to the sounds of joy and gladness, to the glad celebration of brides and grooms in these lands. I will put an end to the sound of people grinding meal. I will put an end to lamps shining in their houses.This whole area will become a desolate wasteland. These nations will be subject to the king of Babylon for seventy years.’

Mourn over the land of my people, which is overgrown with thorns and briers, and over all the once- happy houses in the city filled with revelry.For the fortress is neglected; the once-crowded city is abandoned. Hill and watchtower are permanently uninhabited. Wild donkeys love to go there, and flocks graze there.

I replied,“ How long, sovereign master?” He said,“ Until cities are in ruins and unpopulated, and houses are uninhabited, and the land is ruined and devastated,and the LORD has sent the people off to a distant place, and the very heart of the land is completely abandoned.

Seventy men from the elders of the house of Israel( with Jaazaniah son of Shaphan standing among them) were standing in front of them, each with a censer in his hand, and fragrant vapors from a cloud of incense were swirling upward.He said to me,“ Do you see, son of man, what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each in the chamber of his idolatrous images? For they think,‘ The LORD does not see us! The LORD has abandoned the land!’”He said to me,“ You will see them practicing even greater abominations!”Then he brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the LORD’s house. I noticed women sitting there weeping for Tammuz.He said to me,“ Do you see this, son of man? You will see even greater abominations than these!”Then he brought me to the inner court of the LORD’s house. Right there at the entrance to the LORD’s temple, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men with their backs to the LORD’s temple, facing east– they were worshiping the sun toward the east!He said to me,“ Do you see, son of man? Is it a trivial thing that the house of Judah commits these abominations they are practicing here? For they have filled the land with violence and provoked me to anger still further. Look, they are putting the branch to their nose!Therefore I will act with fury! My eye will not pity them nor will I spare them. When they have shouted in my ears, I will not listen to them.”

The earth will be completely devastated and thoroughly ransacked. For the LORD has decreed this judgment.

I invoke heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that you will surely and swiftly be removed from the very land you are about to cross the Jordan to possess. You will not last long there because you will surely be annihilated.

For the LORD says,‘ I will make both you and your friends terrified of what will happen to you. You will see all of them die by the swords of their enemies. I will hand all the people of Judah over to the king of Babylon. He will carry some of them away into exile in Babylon and he will kill others of them with the sword.

The LORD will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known, gods of wood and stone.

A wind lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the Lord’s temple that faces the east. There, at the entrance of the gate, I noticed twenty-five men. Among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, officials of the people.The LORD said to me,“ Son of man, these are the men who plot evil and give wicked advice in this city.They say,‘ The time is not near to build houses; the city is a cooking pot and we are the meat in it.’Therefore, prophesy against them! Prophesy, son of man!”Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon me and said to me,“ Say: This is what the LORD says:‘ This is what you are thinking, O house of Israel; I know what goes through your minds.You have killed many people in this city; you have filled its streets with corpses.’Therefore, this is what the sovereign LORD says:‘ The corpses you have dumped in the midst of the city are the meat, and this city is the cooking pot, but I will take you out of it.You fear the sword, so the sword I will bring against you,’ declares the sovereign LORD.‘ But I will take you out of the city. And I will hand you over to foreigners. I will execute judgments on you.You will die by the sword; I will judge you at the border of Israel. Then you will know that I am the LORD.This city will not be a cooking pot for you, and you will not be meat within it; I will judge you at the border of Israel.

When King Toi of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer,

I will bring such disaster on them that all the kingdoms of the earth will be horrified. I will make them an object of reproach, a proverbial example of disaster. I will make them an object of ridicule, an example to be used in curses. That is how they will be remembered wherever I banish them.I will bring war, starvation, and disease on them until they are completely destroyed from the land I gave them and their ancestors.’”

The LORD will force you and your king whom you will appoint over you to go away to a people whom you and your ancestors have not known, and you will serve other gods of wood and stone there.

“ That is because, from the least important to the most important of them, all of them are greedy for dishonest gain. Prophets and priests alike, all of them practice deceit.They offer only superficial help for the harm my people have suffered. They say,‘ Everything will be all right!’ But everything is not all right!Are they ashamed because they have done such shameful things? No, they are not at all ashamed. They do not even know how to blush! So they will die, just like others have died. They will be brought to ruin when I punish them,” says the LORD.

They captured him and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah in the territory of Hamath and he passed sentence on him there.

The LORD announced,“ I will also spurn Judah, just as I spurned Israel. I will reject this city that I chose– both Jerusalem and the temple, about which I said,“ I will live there.”

So the LORD rejected all of Israel’s descendants; he humiliated them and handed them over to robbers, until he had thrown them from his presence.

Finally the LORD rejected Israel just as he had warned he would do through all his servants the prophets. Israel was deported from its land to Assyria and remains there to this very day.

But he left behind in the land of Judah some of the poor people who owned nothing. He gave them fields and vineyards at that time.

I will scatter you among the nations and unsheathe the sword after you, so your land will become desolate and your cities will become a waste.“‘ Then the land will make up for its Sabbaths all the days it lies desolate while you are in the land of your enemies; then the land will rest and make up its Sabbaths.All the days of the desolation it will have the rest it did not have on your Sabbaths when you lived on it.
