The Lord has opened his arsenal and brought out the weapons of his wrath, for the Sovereign Lord Almighty has work to do in the land of the Babylonians.

I have opened up my storeroom. I have brought out the weapons I use when I am angry. I am the Lord and King who rules over all. I have work to do in the land of the Babylonians.

On a bare hill raise a signal; cry aloud to them; wave the hand for them to enter the gates of the nobles.I myself have commanded my consecrated ones, and have summoned my mighty men to execute my anger, my proudly exulting ones.The sound of a tumult is on the mountains as of a great multitude! The sound of an uproar of kingdoms, of nations gathering together! The Lord of hosts is mustering a host for battle.They come from a distant land, from the end of the heavens, the Lord and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land.

Is a trumpet blown in a city, and the people are not afraid? Does disaster come to a city, unless the Lord has done it?

“ Sharpen the arrows! Take up the shields! The Lord has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes, because his purpose concerning Babylon is to destroy it, for that is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance for his temple.“ Set up a standard against the walls of Babylon; make the watch strong; set up watchmen; prepare the ambushes; for the Lord has both planned and done what he spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.

Behold, I am stirring up the Medes against them, who have no regard for silver and do not delight in gold.Their bows will slaughter the young men; they will have no mercy on the fruit of the womb; their eyes will not pity children.

“ I will rise up against them,” declares the Lord of hosts,“ and will cut off from Babylon name and remnant, descendants and posterity,” declares the Lord.“ And I will make it a possession of the hedgehog, and pools of water, and I will sweep it with the broom of destruction,” declares the Lord of hosts.The Lord of hosts has sworn:“ As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand,

“ Assemble, all of you, and listen! Who among them has declared these things? The Lord loves him; he shall perform his purpose on Babylon, and his arm shall be against the Chaldeans.I, even I, have spoken and called him; I have brought him, and he will prosper in his way.

“ A sword against the Chaldeans, declares the Lord, and against the inhabitants of Babylon, and against her officials and her wise men!A sword against the diviners, that they may become fools! A sword against her warriors, that they may be destroyed!A sword against her horses and against her chariots, and against all the foreign troops in her midst, that they may become women! A sword against all her treasures, that they may be plundered!A drought against her waters, that they may be dried up! For it is a land of images, and they are mad over idols.

When he sees riders, horsemen in pairs, riders on donkeys, riders on camels, let him listen diligently, very diligently.”Then he who saw cried out:“ Upon a watchtower I stand, O Lord, continually by day, and at my post I am stationed whole nights.And behold, here come riders, horsemen in pairs!” And he answered,“ Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the carved images of her gods he has shattered to the ground.”
