猶大王約西亞的兒子約雅敬執政第四年，尼利亞的兒子巴錄把耶利米口述的話寫在書卷上。耶利米說：「巴錄啊，以色列的上帝耶和華說，『你曾說，我真悲慘！因為耶和華使我痛上加痛，呻吟不止，身心疲憊，不得安寧。』

還命令自己的兒子耶拉篾、亞斯列的兒子西萊雅和亞伯德的兒子示利米雅去拘捕書記巴錄和耶利米先知。但耶和華把他們藏了起來。

這幾位官長就對西底迦王說：「求你處死這人！因為他的話令這城的軍民士氣低落。這人不為人民著想，反要害他們。」

耶利米就叫來尼利亞的兒子巴錄。巴錄按耶利米的口述把耶和華的話寫在卷軸上，

巴錄來到耶和華殿新門入口處的上院，在沙番的兒子書記基瑪利雅的房間，向眾人宣讀耶利米寫在卷軸上的話。

「人們因為我的緣故侮辱、迫害、肆意毀謗你們，你們就有福了。要歡喜快樂，因為你們在天上有很大的獎賞。他們也曾這樣迫害以前的先知。

我愛他們，他們卻控告我，但我為他們禱告。

你們為人子的緣故而遭人憎恨、棄絕、侮辱、毀謗，就有福了！那時你們要歡喜雀躍，因為你們在天上有大賞賜！他們的祖先也曾這樣惡待以前的先知。

人人都誇讚你們的時候，你們就有禍了，因為他們的祖先也是這樣誇讚假先知！
