When Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him heard about all the crimes Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed,

Johanan, the son of Kareah, was told what had happened. And so were all the other army officers with him. They heard about all the crimes Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, had committed.

But when Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces with him heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done,

加利亞的兒子約哈難和在田野的眾將領，都到米斯巴去見基大利，對他說：“亞捫王巴利斯派尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利來殺你，你知道嗎？”亞希甘的兒子基大利不相信他們。後來加利亞的兒子約哈難在米斯巴私下告訴基大利說：“請容我去把尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利殺了，必沒有人知道；為甚麼要讓他殺你，以致集合到你那裡來的所有猶大人都分散，猶大餘剩的人都滅亡呢？”但亞希甘的兒子基大利對加利亞的兒子約哈難說：“你不可作這事，因為你所說關於以實瑪利的事都是謊話！”

在田野的眾將領和他們的士兵，聽見巴比倫王委派了亞希甘的兒子基大利管理那地，也委派他管理那些沒有被擄到巴比倫去的男人、婦女、孩童，和那地最貧窮的人，他們就來到米斯巴去見基大利；其中有尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利、加利亞的兩個兒子約哈難和約拿單、單戶篾的兒子西萊雅、尼陀法人以斐的眾子，和瑪迦人的兒子耶撒尼亞，以及他們的士兵。

何沙雅的兒子亞撒利雅，和加利亞的兒子約哈難，以及所有狂傲的人，就對耶利米說：“你在說謊！耶和華我們的神並沒有差遣你來說：‘你們不可去埃及，在那裡寄居。’只是尼利亞的兒子巴錄慫恿你來反對我們，為要把我們交在迦勒底人的手中，好使我們被殺害，或被擄到巴比倫去。”於是加利亞的兒子約哈難和眾將領，以及眾民，都不聽從耶和華要他們留在猶大地的命令。相反地，加利亞的兒子約哈難和眾將領卻率領猶大所有餘剩的人，就是那些從被趕逐到各國回來住在猶大地的，

請為我們求耶和華你的神指示我們當走的路和該作的事。”

所有的將領，包括加利亞的兒子約哈難和何沙雅的兒子耶撒尼亞，以及全體人民，從最小的到最大的，都上前來，

尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利和與他一起的那十個人就起來，用刀襲擊沙番的孫子、亞希甘的兒子基大利，就是巴比倫王指派管理那地的，把他殺掉。以實瑪利也擊殺了所有在米斯巴和基大利一起的猶大人，以及在那裡所遇見的迦勒底軍兵。

他們到了城中，尼探雅的兒子以實瑪利和與他一起的人，就把他們殺了，扔在坑裡。
