他作王的第九年、十月十日、巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒來了，他和他的全軍來攻耶路撒冷，紮營攻城，四圍築壘來攻打。於是那城被圍困、直到西底家王十一年。四月九日、城裏大鬧饑荒，甚至當地的人民都沒有糧食。城被攻破，王和所有的戰士就在夜間從靠近王家園子兩城牆中間的門那路向出城逃跑；那時迦勒底人正在四圍攻城；他們就按亞拉巴路向走。迦勒底人的軍隊追趕了王，在耶利哥原野追上了他；他的全軍都離開他潰散了。迦勒底人將王捉住，把他帶上去到利比拉巴比倫王那裏，就宣佈判語來定他的罪。又在西底家眼前將他兒子們都宰殺掉，並將西底家一對眼睛都弄瞎了，然後用銅鍊鎖着他，帶到巴比倫去。五月七日、當巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒王十九年、巴比倫王的臣僕、護衛長尼布撒拉旦、來到耶路撒冷。他把永恆主的殿和王的宮室都燒掉，又燒了耶路撒冷的一切房屋，連所有大幢的房屋都放火燒。耶路撒冷四圍的城牆、那跟從護衛長的迦勒底人全軍都給拆毁了。城裏剩下的餘民、和那些投降了巴比倫王的人、以及其餘的蜂擁眾人、護衛長尼布撒拉旦都擄了去過流亡的生活。但是護衛長仍將猶大地最貧寒的一些人留下來做修理葡萄園和種地的人。
