他就下到王宮，進入文士的屋子。眾首領，就是文士以利沙瑪、示瑪雅的兒子第萊雅、亞革波的兒子以利拿單、沙番的兒子基瑪利雅、哈拿尼雅的兒子西底家，和其餘的首領都坐在那裏。於是米該亞對他們述說他所聽見的一切話，就是巴錄向百姓念那書的時候所聽見的。眾首領就打發古示的曾孫、示利米雅的孫子、尼探雅的兒子猶底到巴錄那裏，對他說：「你將所念給百姓聽的書卷拿在手中到我們這裏來。」尼利亞的兒子巴錄就手拿書卷來到他們那裏。他們對他說：「請你坐下，念給我們聽。」巴錄就念給他們聽。他們聽見這一切話就害怕，面面相觀，對巴錄說：「我們必須將這一切話告訴王。」他們問巴錄說：「請你告訴我們，你怎樣從他口中寫這一切話呢？」巴錄回答說：「他用口向我說這一切話，我就用筆墨寫在書上。」眾首領對巴錄說：「你和耶利米要去藏起來，不可叫人知道你們在哪裏。」

首領和眾民就對祭司、先知說：「這人是不該死的，因為他是奉耶和華－我們神的名向我們說話。」國中的長老就有幾個人起來，對聚會的眾民說：

然而，沙番的兒子亞希甘保護耶利米，不交在百姓的手中治死他。

其中的首領彷彿豺狼抓撕掠物，殺人流血，傷害人命，要得不義之財。

以利拿單和第萊雅，並基瑪利雅懇求王不要燒這書卷，他卻不聽。

於是首領對王說：「求你將這人治死；因他向城裏剩下的兵丁和眾民說這樣的話，使他們的手發軟。這人不是求這百姓得平安，乃是叫他們受災禍。」西底家王說：「他在你們手中，無論何事，王也不能與你們反對。」他們就拿住耶利米，下在哈米勒的兒子瑪基雅的牢獄裏；那牢獄在護衛兵的院中。他們用繩子將耶利米繫下去。牢獄裏沒有水，只有淤泥，耶利米就陷在淤泥中。

耶利米說：「你這是謊話，我並不是投降迦勒底人。」伊利雅不聽他的話，就拿住他，解到首領那裏。首領惱怒耶利米，就打了他，將他囚在文士約拿單的房屋中，因為他們以這房屋當作監牢。耶利米來到獄中，進入牢房，在那裏囚了多日。

「看哪，以色列的首領各逞其能，在你中間流人之血。
