These double calamities have come upon you— who can comfort you?— ruin and destruction, famine and sword— who can console you?

A third of your people will die of the plague or perish by famine inside you; a third will fall by the sword outside your walls; and a third I will scatter to the winds and pursue with drawn sword.“ Then my anger will cease and my wrath against them will subside, and I will be avenged. I will bring more and more famine upon you and cut off your supply of food.I will send famine and wild beasts against you, and they will leave you childless. Plague and bloodshed will sweep through you, and I will bring the sword against you. I the Lord have spoken.”

They have lied about the Lord; they said,“ He will do nothing! No harm will come to us; we will never see sword or famine.

And if they ask you,‘ Where shall we go?’ tell them,‘ This is what the Lord says:“‘ Those destined for death, to death; those for the sword, to the sword; those for starvation, to starvation; those for captivity, to captivity.’

“ Say this to them:‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, those who are left in the ruins will fall by the sword, those out in the country I will give to the wild animals to be devoured, and those in strongholds and caves will die of a plague.

“ Therefore this is what the Lord says: You have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom to your own people. So I now proclaim‘ freedom’ for you, declares the Lord—‘ freedom’ to fall by the sword, plague and famine. I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth.

Therefore this is what the Lord says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying,‘ No sword or famine will touch this land.’ Those same prophets will perish by sword and famine.And the people they are prophesying to will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and sword. There will be no one to bury them, their wives, their sons and their daughters. I will pour out on them the calamity they deserve.

I will scatter them among nations that neither they nor their ancestors have known, and I will pursue them with the sword until I have made an end of them.”

“ They will die of deadly diseases. They will not be mourned or buried but will be like dung lying on the ground. They will perish by sword and famine, and their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.”

One who is far away will die of the plague, and one who is near will fall by the sword, and anyone who survives and is spared will die of famine. So will I pour out my wrath on them.And they will know that I am the Lord, when their people lie slain among their idols around their altars, on every high hill and on all the mountaintops, under every spreading tree and every leafy oak— places where they offered fragrant incense to all their idols.And I will stretch out my hand against them and make the land a desolate waste from the desert to Diblah— wherever they live. Then they will know that I am the Lord.’”

The word of the Lord came to me:“ Son of man, if a country sins against me by being unfaithful and I stretch out my hand against it to cut off its food supply and send famine upon it and kill its people and their animals,even if these three men— Noah, Daniel and Job— were in it, they could save only themselves by their righteousness, declares the Sovereign Lord.“ Or if I send wild beasts through that country and they leave it childless and it becomes desolate so that no one can pass through it because of the beasts,as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, even if these three men were in it, they could not save their own sons or daughters. They alone would be saved, but the land would be desolate.“ Or if I bring a sword against that country and say,‘ Let the sword pass throughout the land,’ and I kill its people and their animals,as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, even if these three men were in it, they could not save their own sons or daughters. They alone would be saved.“ Or if I send a plague into that land and pour out my wrath on it through bloodshed, killing its people and their animals,as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, even if Noah, Daniel and Job were in it, they could save neither son nor daughter. They would save only themselves by their righteousness.“ For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: How much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem my four dreadful judgments— sword and famine and wild beasts and plague— to kill its men and their animals!

Outside is the sword; inside are plague and famine. Those in the country will die by the sword; those in the city will be devoured by famine and plague.

“‘“ If, however, any nation or kingdom will not serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon or bow its neck under his yoke, I will punish that nation with the sword, famine and plague, declares the Lord, until I destroy it by his hand.

“‘ In this place I will ruin the plans of Judah and Jerusalem. I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies, at the hands of those who want to kill them, and I will give their carcasses as food to the birds and the wild animals.
