“ In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravenous lion.

Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted. (niv)

Lord, do not your eyes look for truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain; you crushed them, but they refused correction. They made their faces harder than stone and refused to repent. (niv)

Therefore say to them,‘ This is the nation that has not obeyed the Lord its God or responded to correction. Truth has perished; it has vanished from their lips. (niv)

But the people have not returned to him who struck them, nor have they sought the Lord Almighty. (niv)

“ Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. (niv)

The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood— idols that cannot see or hear or walk.Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts. But they plotted against him, and by order of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the Lord’s temple. (niv)

He replied,“ I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” (niv)

But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy. (niv)

In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day— for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. She obeys no one, she accepts no correction. She does not trust in the Lord, she does not draw near to her God. (niv)

At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed.Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully.He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.“ He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’“ But the tenants said to one another,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. (niv)

The bellows blow fiercely to burn away the lead with fire, but the refining goes on in vain; the wicked are not purged out.They are called rejected silver, because the Lord has rejected them.” (niv)

“ I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning:‘ You disciplined me like an unruly calf, and I have been disciplined. Restore me, and I will return, because you are the Lord my God. (niv)

In his time of trouble King Ahaz became even more unfaithful to the Lord. (niv)

“ Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them.So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.Because of this, God in his wisdom said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world,from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all. (niv)

They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him. (niv)
