Woe to those who devise iniquity, And work out evil on their beds! At morning light they practice it, Because it is in the power of their hand.They covet fields and take them by violence, Also houses, and seize them. So they oppress a man and his house, A man and his inheritance.

In the same day I will punish All those who leap over the threshold, Who fill their masters’ houses with violence and deceit.

And you will become their booty.Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you, Because of men’s blood And the violence of the land and the city, And of all who dwell in it.“ Woe to him who covets evil gain for his house, That he may set his nest on high, That he may be delivered from the power of disaster!You give shameful counsel to your house, Cutting off many peoples, And sin against your soul.For the stone will cry out from the wall, And the beam from the timbers will answer it.“ Woe to him who builds a town with bloodshed, Who establishes a city by iniquity!

“ I will send out the curse,” says the Lord of hosts;“ It shall enter the house of the thief And the house of the one who swears falsely by My name. It shall remain in the midst of his house And consume it, with its timber and stones.”

Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter.

As a cage is full of birds, So their houses are full of deceit. Therefore they have become great and grown rich.They have grown fat, they are sleek; Yes, they surpass the deeds of the wicked; They do not plead the cause, The cause of the fatherless; Yet they prosper, And the right of the needy they do not defend.

In you they take bribes to shed blood; you take usury and increase; you have made profit from your neighbors by extortion, and have forgotten Me,” says the Lord GOD.“ Behold, therefore, I beat My fists at the dishonest profit which you have made, and at the bloodshed which has been in your midst.

The women of My people you cast out From their pleasant houses; From their children You have taken away My glory forever.

Are there yet the treasures of wickedness In the house of the wicked, And the short measure that is an abomination?Shall I count pure those with the wicked scales, And with the bag of deceitful weights?For her rich men are full of violence, Her inhabitants have spoken lies, And their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

But they lie in wait for their own blood, They lurk secretly for their own lives.So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; It takes away the life of its owners.

And I will come near you for judgment; I will be a swift witness Against sorcerers, Against adulterers, Against perjurers, Against those who exploit wage earners and widows and orphans, And against those who turn away an alien— Because they do not fear Me,” Says the Lord of hosts.

“ A cunning Canaanite! Deceitful scales are in his hand; He loves to oppress.And Ephraim said,‘ Surely I have become rich, I have found wealth for myself; In all my labors They shall find in me no iniquity that is sin.’

That they may successfully do evil with both hands— The prince asks for gifts, The judge seeks a bribe, And the great man utters his evil desire; So they scheme together.

For they do not know to do right,’ Says the Lord,‘ Who store up violence and robbery in their palaces.’”

Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.

Your princes are rebellious, And companions of thieves; Everyone loves bribes, And follows after rewards. They do not defend the fatherless, Nor does the cause of the widow come before them.Therefore the Lord says, The Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,“ Ah, I will rid Myself of My adversaries, And take vengeance on My enemies.

whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain.

“ But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.

By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.

Hear this, you who swallow up the needy, And make the poor of the land fail,Saying:“ When will the New Moon be past, That we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, That we may trade wheat? Making the ephah small and the shekel large, Falsifying the scales by deceit,That we may buy the poor for silver, And the needy for a pair of sandals— Even sell the bad wheat?”

A ruler who lacks understanding is a great oppressor, But he who hates covetousness will prolong his days.

But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.
