耶和華的天使從吉甲來到波金，對以色列人說：「我帶你們離開埃及，領你們去我起誓要賜給你們祖先的土地。我說，『我永不廢棄跟你們立的約，

瑪挪亞向耶和華祈求說：「主啊，求你再派你的僕人到這裡來，教我們怎樣照顧要出生的孩子。」

其中一人說：「明年這時候，我會再來你這裡，撒拉必生一個兒子。」這話被站在那人後面帳篷口的撒拉聽見了。

使她懷孕。她後來生了一個兒子，給孩子取名叫撒母耳，因為她說：「他是我向耶和華求來的。」

以利沙對她說：「明年這時候，你必抱一個兒子。」她說：「上帝的僕人，我主啊，不要騙我。」

婦人就去對丈夫說：「有一位上帝的僕人向我顯現，他的容貌像上帝的天使，非常可畏。我沒有問他從哪裡來，他也沒有把名字告訴我。

她趕忙跑去告訴她丈夫說：「那天來的那人又向我顯現了。」

我必賜福給她，讓她為你生一個兒子。她必成為萬族的母親，萬民的君王必從她而出。」

耶和華的天使在曠野中通往書珥之路的水泉旁找到了夏甲，便問她：「撒萊的婢女夏甲，你從哪裡來？要到哪裡去？」她回答說：「我是從女主人撒萊那裡逃出來的。」耶和華的天使對她說：「你要回到女主人那裡順服她。」又說：「我必使你的後代多得不可勝數。」接著又說：「你現在懷了孕，將來會生一個男孩，你要給他取名叫以實瑪利，因為耶和華已經聽見你痛苦的哀聲。這孩子性情必像野驢，他要跟人作對，人也要跟他作對。他必與他所有的弟兄為敵。」夏甲稱對她說話的耶和華為「看顧人的上帝」，她說：「我竟然在這裡看見了看顧我的上帝。」

天使到了瑪麗亞那裡，說：「恭喜你！蒙大恩的女子，主與你同在！」瑪麗亞聽了覺得十分困惑，反覆思想這話的意思。天使對她說：「瑪麗亞，不要害怕，你在上帝面前已經蒙恩了。你要懷孕生子，並給祂取名叫耶穌。祂偉大無比，將被稱為至高者的兒子，主上帝要把祂祖先大衛的王位賜給祂。祂要永遠統治以色列，祂的國度永無窮盡。」瑪麗亞對天使說：「這怎麼可能呢？我還是童貞女。」天使回答說：「聖靈要臨到你身上，至高者的能力要蔭庇你，所以你要生的那聖嬰必稱為上帝的兒子。看啊，你的親戚伊莉莎白年紀老邁，一向不能生育，現在已經懷男胎六個月了。因為上帝無所不能。」瑪麗亞說：「我是主的婢女，願你所說的話在我身上成就。」於是天使離開了她。
