The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin and Ephraim; Israel was in great distress.

那時有古實人謝拉率領一百萬軍隊，戰車三百輛，前來攻打猶大人；他來到了瑪利沙。

撒母耳對掃羅說：“你為甚麼攪擾我，把我招上來呢？”掃羅說：“我非常苦惱，非利士人正在攻打我，神又離開了我，不再藉著先知或異夢回答我。所以我請你上來，指示我應該怎樣行。”

那時，出入的人都沒有平安，因為各國的居民都遭遇動亂。

後來，摩押人、亞捫人和一些米烏尼人（按照《馬索拉文本》，“米烏尼人”作“亞捫人”；現參照《七十士譯本》的一些文本翻譯；參代下26:7），一同來攻擊約沙法。有人來向約沙法報告說：“從海的對岸，就是從以東（按照《馬索拉文本》的絕大部分文本，“以東”作“亞蘭”，大概是手民之誤﹔兩者在原文非常相似﹐但按地理應作“以東”），有大軍前來攻擊你；現在他們在哈洗遜．他瑪。”哈洗遜．他瑪就是隱．基底。

在那些國中，你必不得安息，也沒有腳掌歇息的地方；耶和華卻必使你在那裡心中發顫，眼目憔悴，精神頹廢。

以色列人又行了耶和華看為惡的事，耶和華就使摩押王伊磯倫強盛起來，欺壓以色列人，因為他們行了耶和華看為惡的事。伊磯倫集合了亞捫人和亞瑪力人，前來擊敗了以色列人，佔領了棕樹城。

每逢以色列人撒種以後，米甸人、亞瑪力人和東方人都上來，欺壓他們；對著他們安營，毀壞那地的出產，直到迦薩一帶，他們沒有留下牛、羊和驢，沒有給以色列人留下一點養生之物。因為他們帶著牲畜和帳棚上來，像蝗蟲那麼多；他們來的人和駱駝無數，進入境內，毀壞全地。
