嗐！你们这些富足人哪，应当哭泣、号啕，因为将有苦难临到你们身上。

你们这些富有的人啊！为那将要临到你们身上的灾难痛哭哀号吧！

你们富有的人哪，应当为那将要临到你们的灾祸哭泣哀号。

现在来吧，你们这些富有的人哪！应当为那些将要临到你们的惨祸而痛哭、哀号！

嗐！你們這些富足人哪，應當哭泣、號咷，因為將有苦難臨到你們身上。

注意！你們這些富足人哪，要為將要臨到你們身上的災難哭泣、號咷。

注意！你們這些富足人哪，要為將要臨到你們身上的災難哭泣、號咷。

你們這些富有的人啊！為那將要臨到你們身上的災難痛哭哀號吧！

你們富有的人哪，應當為那將要臨到你們的災禍哭泣哀號。

來，如今請注意！富足的人哪，應當因你們的慘難、那將要臨到的慘難、來哭泣號咷。

現在來吧，你們這些富有的人哪！應當為那些將要臨到你們的慘禍而痛哭、哀號！

噫、富者歟、宜悲泣號咷、因苦難將臨於爾也、

富者當思將來之苦而號泣、

噫、富者乎、當哀哭號泣、因苦難將臨爾也、

咄咄富人、爾其休矣、災禍將臨爾身、爾盍哀號痛哭乎！

Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you.

You rich people, listen to me. Cry and weep, because you will soon be suffering.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.

Look here, you rich people: Weep and groan with anguish because of all the terrible troubles ahead of you.

Come now, you rich people, weep and wail over the miseries that are coming on you.

Go to now,[ ye] rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon[ you].

He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like foliage.

But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Thus says the Lord:“ Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches;

Wail, for the day of the Lord is at hand! It will come as destruction from the Almighty.

Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, But righteousness delivers from death.

Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction.Oh, how they are brought to desolation, as in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors.As a dream when one awakes, So, Lord, when You awake, You shall despise their image.

“ But woe to you who are rich, For you have received your consolation.Woe to you who are full, For you shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, For you shall mourn and weep.

Come now, you who say,“ Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”;

For I was envious of the boastful, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked.For there are no pangs in their death, But their strength is firm.They are not in trouble as other men, Nor are they plagued like other men.Therefore pride serves as their necklace; Violence covers them like a garment.Their eyes bulge with abundance; They have more than heart could wish.They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression; They speak loftily.They set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue walks through the earth.

For her rich men are full of violence, Her inhabitants have spoken lies, And their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

And they took strong cities and a rich land, And possessed houses full of all goods, Cisterns already dug, vineyards, olive groves, And fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled and grew fat, And delighted themselves in Your great goodness.“ Nevertheless they were disobedient And rebelled against You, Cast Your law behind their backs And killed Your prophets, who testified against them To turn them to Yourself; And they worked great provocations.

For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.

But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?

He swallows down riches And vomits them up again; God casts them out of his belly.He will suck the poison of cobras; The viper’s tongue will slay him.He will not see the streams, The rivers flowing with honey and cream.He will restore that for which he labored, And will not swallow it down; From the proceeds of business He will get no enjoyment.For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor, He has violently seized a house which he did not build.“ Because he knows no quietness in his heart, He will not save anything he desires.Nothing is left for him to eat; Therefore his well-being will not last.In his self-sufficiency he will be in distress; Every hand of misery will come against him.When he is about to fill his stomach, God will cast on him the fury of His wrath, And will rain it on him while he is eating.He will flee from the iron weapon; A bronze bow will pierce him through.It is drawn, and comes out of the body; Yes, the glittering point comes out of his gall. Terrors come upon him;Total darkness is reserved for his treasures. An unfanned fire will consume him; It shall go ill with him who is left in his tent.The heavens will reveal his iniquity, And the earth will rise up against him.The increase of his house will depart, And his goods will flow away in the day of His wrath.This is the portion from God for a wicked man, The heritage appointed to him by God.”

Then He spoke a parable to them, saying:“ The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.And he thought within himself, saying,‘ What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’So he said,‘ I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.And I will say to my soul,“ Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”’But God said to him,‘ Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’“ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

“ But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; You grew fat, you grew thick, You are obese! Then he forsook God who made him, And scornfully esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

lest— when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them;and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied;when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

Neither their silver nor their gold Shall be able to deliver them In the day of the LORD’s wrath; But the whole land shall be devoured By the fire of His jealousy, For He will make speedy riddance Of all those who dwell in the land.

“ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate,desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.“ Then he cried and said,‘ Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’But Abraham said,‘ Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.

Be ashamed, you farmers, Wail, you vinedressers, For the wheat and the barley; Because the harvest of the field has perished.

and say:‘ What is your mother? A lioness: She lay down among the lions; Among the young lions she nourished her cubs.

Wail, O cypress, for the cedar has fallen, Because the mighty trees are ruined. Wail, O oaks of Bashan, For the thick forest has come down.There is the sound of wailing shepherds! For their glory is in ruins. There is the sound of roaring lions! For the pride of the Jordan is in ruins.

Who drink wine from bowls, And anoint yourselves with the best ointments, But are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.Therefore they shall now go captive as the first of the captives, And those who recline at banquets shall be removed.

Those who trust in their wealth And boast in the multitude of their riches,None of them can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give to God a ransom for him—For the redemption of their souls is costly, And it shall cease forever—That he should continue to live eternally, And not see the Pit.For he sees wise men die; Likewise the fool and the senseless person perish, And leave their wealth to others.Their inner thought is that their houses will last forever, Their dwelling places to all generations; They call their lands after their own names.Nevertheless man, though in honor, does not remain; He is like the beasts that perish.This is the way of those who are foolish, And of their posterity who approve their sayings. SelahLike sheep they are laid in the grave; Death shall feed on them; The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; And their beauty shall be consumed in the grave, far from their dwelling.But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave, For He shall receive me. SelahDo not be afraid when one becomes rich, When the glory of his house is increased;For when he dies he shall carry nothing away; His glory shall not descend after him.Though while he lives he blesses himself( For men will praise you when you do well for yourself),He shall go to the generation of his fathers; They shall never see light.A man who is in honor, yet does not understand, Is like the beasts that perish.

And in that day the Lord GOD of hosts Called for weeping and for mourning, For baldness and for girding with sackcloth.But instead, joy and gladness, Slaying oxen and killing sheep, Eating meat and drinking wine:“ Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

There is a severe evil which I have seen under the sun: Riches kept for their owner to his hurt.But those riches perish through misfortune; When he begets a son, there is nothing in his hand.

Then Jesus said to His disciples,“ Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

Gird yourselves and lament, you priests; Wail, you who minister before the altar; Come, lie all night in sackcloth, You who minister to my God; For the grain offering and the drink offering Are withheld from the house of your God.

With Your hand from men, O Lord, From men of the world who have their portion in this life, And whose belly You fill with Your hidden treasure. They are satisfied with children, And leave the rest of their possession for their babes.

Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.

But Jesus, turning to them, said,“ Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.For indeed the days are coming in which they will say,‘ Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’

Awake, you drunkards, and weep; And wail, all you drinkers of wine, Because of the new wine, For it has been cut off from your mouth.

And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains,and said to the mountains and rocks,“ Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

For this, clothe yourself with sackcloth, Lament and wail. For the fierce anger of the Lord Has not turned back from us.
