我破坏假先知的预兆，使占卜者显为愚妄；我颠覆了智慧人，使他们的知识变为愚拙；

我使誑者之兆不驗、卜筮之輩顚狂、智者卻退、其聰慧變為愚拙、

卜筮之輩、設兆惑人、我使其言不驗、彼自矜巧慧、反形愚拙、我使之然。

使偽先知所言預兆無驗、使卜筮者顯為愚、使智慧人退後、使其靈巧變為愚拙、

who foils the signs of false prophets and makes fools of diviners, who overthrows the learning of the wise and turns it into nonsense,

“ Some prophets are not really prophets at all. I show that their signs are fake. I make those who practice evil magic look foolish. I destroy the learning of those who think they are wise. Their knowledge does not make any sense at all.

who frustrates the signs of liars and makes fools of diviners, who turns wise men back and makes their knowledge foolish,

I expose the false prophets as liars and make fools of fortune tellers. I cause the wise to give bad advice, thus proving them to be fools.

Causing the omens of diviners to fail, Making fools of fortune tellers; Causing wise men to turn back And making their knowledge ridiculous,

Who frustrates the signs of the babblers, And drives diviners mad; Who turns wise men backward, And makes their knowledge foolishness;

that frustrateth the signs of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;

who destroys the omens of the false prophets and makes fools of diviners; who confounds the wise and makes their knowledge foolishness;

That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise[ men] backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;

who frustrates the omens of the empty talkers and humiliates the omen readers, who overturns the counsel of the wise men and makes their advice seem foolish,

who frustrates the signs of the liars, and makes diviners mad; who turns wise men backward, and makes their knowledge foolish;

The LORD frustrates the counsel of the nations; he thwarts the plans of the peoples.

He frustrates the schemes of the crafty so that they achieve no success.He traps the wise in their craftiness so that the plans of the deceptive are quickly brought to an end.They encounter darkness by day, and they grope at noon as if it were night.

Then someone reported to David,“ Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.”“ LORD,” David pleaded,“ please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness!”

A sword is against the diviners, and they will act foolishly. A sword is against her heroic warriors, and they will be terrified.

I will make her princes and sages drunk, along with her governors, officials, and warriors. Then they will fall asleep forever and never wake up. This is the King’s declaration; the LORD of Armies is his name.

Therefore, I will again confound these people with wonder after wonder. The wisdom of their wise will vanish, and the perception of their perceptive will be hidden.

So take your stand with your spells and your many sorceries, which you have wearied yourself with from your youth. Perhaps you will be able to succeed; perhaps you will inspire terror!You are worn out with your many consultations. So let the astrologers stand and save you— those who observe the stars, those who predict monthly what will happen to you.Look, they are like stubble; fire burns them. They cannot rescue themselves from the power of the flame. This is not a coal for warming themselves, or a fire to sit beside!

his face turned pale, and his thoughts so terrified him that he soiled himself and his knees knocked together.The king shouted to bring in the mediums, Chaldeans, and diviners. He said to these wise men of Babylon,“ Whoever reads this inscription and gives me its interpretation will be clothed in purple, have a gold chain around his neck, and have the third highest position in the kingdom.”So all the king’s wise men came in, but none could read the inscription or make its interpretation known to him.

When the magicians, mediums, Chaldeans, and diviners came in, I told them the dream, but they could not make its interpretation known to me.

So you should not listen to your prophets, diviners, dreamers, fortune-tellers, or sorcerers who say to you,‘ Don’t serve the king of Babylon!’They are prophesying a lie to you so that you will be removed from your land. I will banish you, and you will perish.

Then Zedekiah son of Chenaanah made iron horns and said,“ This is what the LORD says:‘ You will gore the Arameans with these until they are finished off.’”And all the prophets were prophesying the same:“ March up to Ramoth-gilead and succeed, for the LORD will hand it over to the king.”

The princes of Zoan are complete fools; Pharaoh’s wisest advisers give stupid advice! How can you say to Pharaoh,“ I am one of the wise, a student of eastern kings”?Where then are your wise men? Let them tell you and reveal what the LORD of Armies has planned against Egypt.The princes of Zoan have been fools; the princes of Memphis are deceived. Her tribal chieftains have led Egypt astray.The LORD has mixed within her a spirit of confusion. The leaders have made Egypt stagger in all she does, as a drunkard staggers in his vomit.

Now the advice Ahithophel gave in those days was like someone asking about a word from God— such was the regard that both David and Absalom had for Ahithophel’s advice.

About Edom, this is what the LORD of Armies says: Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom rotted away?

The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicians as well as on all the Egyptians.

In every matter of wisdom and understanding that the king consulted them about, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and mediums in his entire kingdom.

So the king died and was brought to Samaria. They buried the king in Samaria.

And all the prophets were prophesying the same, saying,“ March up to Ramoth-gilead and succeed, for the LORD will hand it over to the king.”

“ The LORD asked him,‘ How?’“ He said,‘ I will go and become a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’“ Then he said,‘ You will certainly entice him and prevail. Go and do that.’“ You see, the LORD has put a lying spirit into the mouth of all these prophets of yours, and the LORD has pronounced disaster against you.”Then Zedekiah son of Chenaanah came up, hit Micaiah on the cheek, and demanded,“ Did the Spirit of the LORD leave me to speak to you?”Micaiah replied,“ You will soon see when you go to hide in an inner chamber on that day.”

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, since it is written, He catches the wise in their craftiness;and again, The Lord knows that the reasonings of the wise are futile.

The battle raged throughout that day, and the king of Israel propped himself up in his chariot facing the Arameans until evening. Then he died at sunset.

When Ahithophel realized that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He set his house in order and hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.

The Chaldeans answered the king,“ No one on earth can make known what the king requests. Consequently, no king, however great and powerful, has ever asked anything like this of any magician, medium, or Chaldean.What the king is asking is so difficult that no one can make it known to him except the gods, whose dwelling is not with mortals.”Because of this, the king became violently angry and gave orders to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.

Where is the one who is wise? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn’t God made the world’s wisdom foolish?For since, in God’s wisdom, the world did not know God through wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of what is preached.For the Jews ask for signs and the Greeks seek wisdom,but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles.Yet to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God,because God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.Brothers and sisters, consider your calling: Not many were wise from a human perspective, not many powerful, not many of noble birth.Instead, God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong.

As for the prophet who prophesies peace— only when the word of the prophet comes true will the prophet be recognized as one the LORD has truly sent.”The prophet Hananiah then took the yoke bar from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah and broke it.In the presence of all the people Hananiah proclaimed,“ This is what the LORD says:‘ In this way, within two years I will break the yoke of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon from the neck of all the nations.’” The prophet Jeremiah then went on his way.After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke bar from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:“ Go say to Hananiah,‘ This is what the LORD says: You broke a wooden yoke bar, but in its place you will make an iron yoke bar.For this is what the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: I have put an iron yoke on the neck of all these nations that they might serve King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, and they will serve him. I have even put the wild animals under him.’”The prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah,“ Listen, Hananiah! The LORD did not send you, but you have led these people to trust in a lie.Therefore, this is what the LORD says:‘ I am about to send you off the face of the earth. You will die this year because you have preached rebellion against the LORD.’”And the prophet Hananiah died that year in the seventh month.
