猶大王約雅敬執政第三年，巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒前來圍攻耶路撒冷。主將猶大王約雅敬及上帝殿中的部分器具交在他手中。他把器具擄到巴比倫的神廟，放在他神明的庫房裡。王吩咐太監長亞施毗拿從以色列的王室貴族中選一些人，即毫無殘疾、相貌英俊、學問淵博、知識豐富、聰慧善學、能在王宮服侍的青年，教他們迦勒底的語言和文字。王安排他們每日享用一份御用的膳食和酒。他們要受教養三年，期滿後好在王身邊供職。被選的人中有猶大族的但以理、哈拿尼雅、米沙利、亞撒利雅。太監長給他們起了名字：稱但以理為伯提沙撒，哈拿尼雅為沙得拉，米沙利為米煞，亞撒利雅為亞伯尼歌。

猶大王約雅斤及其母親、臣僕和文官武將向尼布甲尼撒投降。巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒在他執政第八年俘虜了約雅斤，

那年春天，尼布甲尼撒王派人把他和耶和華殿裡的貴重器皿一同帶到巴比倫。尼布甲尼撒另立約雅斤的叔叔西底迦做猶大和耶路撒冷的王。

迦勒底人擒住西底迦，把他押到利比拉見巴比倫王，在那裡審判他。巴比倫王在西底迦面前殺了他的眾子，又剜去他的雙眼，把他用銅鏈鎖著押往巴比倫。

「你要對這些悖逆的人說，『你們不明白這比喻的意思嗎？』要告訴他們，巴比倫王攻取了耶路撒冷，把其中的君王和大臣擄到巴比倫，並從猶大王室中選出一人與他立約，要他效忠。巴比倫王擄去猶大國的重臣，使猶大國臣服於他，無法圖強，只能遵守盟約，以求生存。後來，猶大王背叛了巴比倫王，派使者到埃及請求支援軍隊馬匹。他能成功嗎？他這樣做怎能逃脫懲罰呢？他這樣背約怎能逃脫懲罰呢？「我憑我的永恆起誓，巴比倫王立他做王，他卻棄約背誓，他必死在巴比倫。敵人築起圍攻的土壘和高臺大肆殺戮的時候，法老雖然兵強馬壯，人多勢眾，仍無法幫他抗敵。他起誓降服，卻棄約背誓，所以絕不能逃避後果。因此，主耶和華說，『我憑我的永恆起誓，他既藐視與我所立的誓言，背棄與我所定的約，我必懲罰他。我要撒開網羅抓住他，把他帶到巴比倫，審判他對我不忠的罪。

沒有被殺戮的人都被擄往巴比倫，做他和他子孫的奴隸，直到波斯帝國的時代。

他把約雅斤及其母親、妃嬪、臣僕和國中政要從耶路撒冷擄到巴比倫。

並且挖去他的雙眼，把他用銅鏈鎖著帶到巴比倫。

所以，耶和華就差遣亞述王的將領來攻擊他們，他們捉住瑪拿西，用鉤子鉤著他，用銅鏈鎖著他押往巴比倫。
