The scoffer will be gone, the arrogant will disappear, and those who plot evil will be killed.

蓋強暴者已滅、侮慢者已亡、乘機為惡者盡絕、

強暴者已滅、侮慢者已亡、聽訟者枉法以害貧、健訟者誣良以害義、此皆為惡之徒也、茲已俱絕、

蓋強暴者已已或作必下同滅、侮慢者已亡、務惡者已絕、

The ruthless will vanish, the mockers will disappear, and all who have an eye for evil will be cut down—

Those who don’t show any pity will vanish. Those who make fun of others will disappear. All those who look for ways to do what is evil will be cut off.

For the ruthless shall come to nothing and the scoffer cease, and all who watch to do evil shall be cut off,

For the ruthless one will vanish, the scorner will disappear, and all those who lie in wait with evil intent will be killed—

For the ruthless will come to an end and the scorner will be finished, Indeed all who are intent on doing evil will be eliminated,

For the terrible one is brought to nothing, The scornful one is consumed, And all who watch for iniquity are cut off—

For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scoffer ceaseth, and all they that watch for iniquity are cut off;

For the ruthless one will vanish, the scorner will disappear, and all those who lie in wait with evil intent will be killed—

For tyrants will disappear, those who taunt will vanish, and all those who love to do wrong will be eliminated–

For the ruthless is brought to nothing, and the scoffer ceases, and all those who are alert to do evil are cut off—

What sorrow awaits you who lie awake at night, thinking up evil plans. You rise at dawn and hurry to carry them out, simply because you have the power to do so.

The Pharisees, who dearly loved their money, heard all this and scoffed at him.

Therefore, listen to this message from the Lord, you scoffing rulers in Jerusalem.You boast,“ We have struck a bargain to cheat death and have made a deal to dodge the grave. The coming destruction can never touch us, for we have built a strong refuge made of lies and deception.”Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says:“ Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken.I will test you with the measuring line of justice and the plumb line of righteousness. Since your refuge is made of lies, a hailstorm will knock it down. Since it is made of deception, a flood will sweep it away.I will cancel the bargain you made to cheat death, and I will overturn your deal to dodge the grave. When the terrible enemy sweeps through, you will be trampled into the ground.Again and again that flood will come, morning after morning, day and night, until you are carried away.” This message will bring terror to your people.The bed you have made is too short to lie on. The blankets are too narrow to cover you.The Lord will come as he did against the Philistines at Mount Perazim and against the Amorites at Gibeon. He will come to do a strange thing; he will come to do an unusual deed:For the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, has plainly said that he is determined to crush the whole land. So scoff no more, or your punishment will be even greater.

“ But suddenly, your ruthless enemies will be crushed like the finest of dust. Your many attackers will be driven away like chaff before the wind. Suddenly, in an instant,

I, the Lord, have dedicated these soldiers for this task. Yes, I have called mighty warriors to express my anger, and they will rejoice when I am exalted.”

Since it was the Sabbath, Jesus’ enemies watched him closely. If he healed the man’s hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.Jesus said to the man with the deformed hand,“ Come and stand in front of everyone.”Then he turned to his critics and asked,“ Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?” But they wouldn’t answer him.He looked around at them angrily and was deeply saddened by their hard hearts. Then he said to the man,“ Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored!At once the Pharisees went away and met with the supporters of Herod to plot how to kill Jesus.

Watching for their opportunity, the leaders sent spies pretending to be honest men. They tried to get Jesus to say something that could be reported to the Roman governor so he would arrest Jesus.“ Teacher,” they said,“ we know that you speak and teach what is right and are not influenced by what others think. You teach the way of God truthfully.Now tell us— is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”He saw through their trickery and said,

Then in my vision that night, I saw a fourth beast— terrifying, dreadful, and very strong. It devoured and crushed its victims with huge iron teeth and trampled their remains beneath its feet. It was different from any of the other beasts, and it had ten horns.

Then Herod and his soldiers began mocking and ridiculing Jesus. Finally, they put a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.

I am raising up the Babylonians, a cruel and violent people. They will march across the world and conquer other lands.They are notorious for their cruelty and do whatever they like.

No one cares about being fair and honest. The people’s lawsuits are based on lies. They conceive evil deeds and then give birth to sin.

Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens,“ It has come at last— salvation and power and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth— the one who accuses them before our God day and night.

The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed.“ He saved others,” they said,“ let him save himself if he is really God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”

But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day.“ There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd.“ Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.”But the Lord replied,“ You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water?This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?”This shamed his enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did.

But you are a tower of refuge to the poor, O Lord, a tower of refuge to the needy in distress. You are a refuge from the storm and a shelter from the heat. For the oppressive acts of ruthless people are like a storm beating against a wall,or like the relentless heat of the desert. But you silence the roar of foreign nations. As the shade of a cloud cools relentless heat, so the boastful songs of ruthless people are stilled.

But the Lord says,“ The captives of warriors will be released, and the plunder of tyrants will be retrieved. For I will fight those who fight you, and I will save your children.

Yet you have forgotten the Lord, your Creator, the one who stretched out the sky like a canopy and laid the foundations of the earth. Will you remain in constant dread of human oppressors? Will you continue to fear the anger of your enemies? Where is their fury and anger now? It is gone!

The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees watched Jesus closely. If he healed the man’s hand, they planned to accuse him of working on the Sabbath.

But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves,“ What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!”

Then I wanted to know the true meaning of the fourth beast, the one so different from the others and so terrifying. It had devoured and crushed its victims with iron teeth and bronze claws, trampling their remains beneath its feet.I also asked about the ten horns on the fourth beast’s head and the little horn that came up afterward and destroyed three of the other horns. This horn had seemed greater than the others, and it had human eyes and a mouth that was boasting arrogantly.As I watched, this horn was waging war against God’s holy people and was defeating them,until the Ancient One— the Most High— came and judged in favor of his holy people. Then the time arrived for the holy people to take over the kingdom.Then he said to me,“ This fourth beast is the fourth world power that will rule the earth. It will be different from all the others. It will devour the whole world, trampling and crushing everything in its path.Its ten horns are ten kings who will rule that empire. Then another king will arise, different from the other ten, who will subdue three of them.He will defy the Most High and oppress the holy people of the Most High. He will try to change their sacred festivals and laws, and they will be placed under his control for a time, times, and half a time.
