O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath.

Hear, you mountains, the indictment of the Lord, and you enduring foundations of the earth, for the Lord has an indictment against his people, and he will contend with Israel.“ O my people, what have I done to you? How have I wearied you? Answer me!For I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.O my people, remember what Balak king of Moab devised, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of the Lord.”

Thus says the Lord:“ Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce, with which I sent her away? Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities you were sold, and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.

And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard.What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes?

Why will you still be struck down? Why will you continue to rebel? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

Fear not, O Jacob my servant, declares the Lord, for I am with you. I will make a full end of all the nations to which I have driven you, but of you I will not make a full end. I will discipline you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.”

For a brief moment I deserted you, but with great compassion I will gather you.

Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel, for the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land. There is no faithfulness or steadfast love, and no knowledge of God in the land;

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

My people are bent on turning away from me, and though they call out to the Most High, he shall not raise them up at all.How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender.I will not execute my burning anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and not a man, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath.

For I am with you to save you, declares the Lord; I will make a full end of all the nations among whom I scattered you, but of you I will not make a full end. I will discipline you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.

For thus says the Lord,“ The whole land shall be a desolation; yet I will not make a full end.

Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No; he would pay attention to me.

Have you not brought this upon yourself by forsaking the Lord your God, when he led you in the way?And now what do you gain by going to Egypt to drink the waters of the Nile? How then have you turned degenerate and become a wild vine?Though you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me, declares the Lord God.How can you say,‘ I am not unclean, I have not gone after the Baals’? Look at your way in the valley; know what you have done— a restless young camel running here and there,a wild donkey used to the wilderness, in her heat sniffing the wind! Who can restrain her lust? None who seek her need weary themselves; in her month they will find her.Keep your feet from going unshod and your throat from thirst. But you said,‘ It is hopeless, for I have loved foreigners, and after them I will go.’“ As a thief is shamed when caught, so the house of Israel shall be shamed: they, their kings, their officials, their priests, and their prophets,who say to a tree,‘ You are my father,’ and to a stone,‘ You gave me birth.’ For they have turned their back to me, and not their face. But in the time of their trouble they say,‘ Arise and save us!’But where are your gods that you made for yourself? Let them arise, if they can save you, in your time of trouble; for as many as your cities are your gods, O Judah.“ Why do you contend with me? You have all transgressed against me, declares the Lord.In vain have I struck your children; they took no correction; your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.And you, O generation, behold the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Why then do my people say,‘ We are free, we will come no more to you’?Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.“ How well you direct your course to seek love! So that even to wicked women you have taught your ways.Also on your skirts is found the lifeblood of the guiltless poor; you did not find them breaking in. Yet in spite of all these thingsyou say,‘ I am innocent; surely his anger has turned from me.’ Behold, I will bring you to judgment for saying,‘ I have not sinned.’How much you go about, changing your way! You shall be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria.From it too you will come away with your hands on your head, for the Lord has rejected those in whom you trust, and you will not prosper by them.

O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath!

Woe to Assyria, the rod of my anger; the staff in their hands is my fury!Against a godless nation I send him, and against the people of my wrath I command him, to take spoil and seize plunder, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

“ Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land;but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be eaten by the sword; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Surely the wrath of man shall praise you; the remnant of wrath you will put on like a belt.

For I will not contend forever, nor will I always be angry; for the spirit would grow faint before me, and the breath of life that I made.
