And there was no water in the cistern, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.When Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern— the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate—Ebed-melech went from the king’s house and said to the king,“ My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they did to Jeremiah the prophet by casting him into the cistern, and he will die there of hunger, for there is no bread left in the city.”Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian,“ Take thirty men with you from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the house of the king, to a wardrobe in the storehouse, and took from there old rags and worn-out clothes, which he let down to Jeremiah in the cistern by ropes.Then Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah,“ Put the rags and clothes between your armpits and the ropes.” Jeremiah did so.Then they drew Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

Terror and the pit and the snare are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth!

These five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.And it was told to Joshua,“ The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.”

And people shall enter the caves of the rocks and the holes of the ground, from before the terror of the Lord, and from the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to terrify the earth.

After many days you will be mustered. In the latter years you will go against the land that is restored from war, the land whose people were gathered from many peoples upon the mountains of Israel, which had been a continual waste. Its people were brought out from the peoples and now dwell securely, all of them.

Then Joshua said,“ Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me from the cave.”And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.And when they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him,“ Come near; put your feet on the necks of these kings.” Then they came near and put their feet on their necks.And Joshua said to them,“ Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous. For thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.”And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees. And they hung on the trees until evening.

Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.
