The Egyptians will lose heart, and I will bring their plans to nothing; they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead, the mediums and the spiritists.

The people of Egypt will lose hope. I will keep them from doing what they plan to do. They will ask their gods for advice. They will turn to the spirits of dead people for help. They will go to people who get messages from those who have died. They will ask for advice from people who talk to the spirits of the dead.

and the spirit of the Egyptians within them will be emptied out, and I will confound their counsel; and they will inquire of the idols and the sorcerers, and the mediums and the necromancers;

The Egyptians will lose heart, and I will confuse their plans. They will plead with their idols for wisdom and call on spirits, mediums, and those who consult the spirits of the dead.

Egypt’s spirit will be disturbed within it, and I will frustrate its plans. Then they will inquire of worthless idols, ghosts, mediums, and spiritists.

Then the spirit of the Egyptians will be demoralized within them; And I will confuse their strategy, So that they will resort to idols and ghosts of the dead, And to mediums and spiritists.

The spirit of Egypt will fail in its midst; I will destroy their counsel, And they will consult the idols and the charmers, The mediums and the sorcerers.

And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst of it; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek unto the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.

維彼交鬼者、及巫覡、其聲綿蠻、其言低俏、或告爾曰、可問斯人、則應之日、民豈不當問其天主哉、豈可為生者問於死者乎、

我罰爾之日至、爾心豈不怯乎、爾手豈不疲乎、我耶和華既言必成、

爾自幼勤於符咒、多行巫術、今試立於此、今試立於此或作今任爾仍如此行或可得益、或可勝敵、勝敵或作恐喝敵人

遂命召巴比倫諸哲士、咸詣我前、欲彼以夢兆告我、欲彼以夢兆告我或作使彼為我解夢於是博士、術士、迦勒底人、星士、咸集、我告以所夢、彼不能示我其兆、示我其兆或作為我解之

東傾西欹、猶如醉酒、縱有技巧、無處可施、

萬有之主既定其謀、誰能廢之、既行其罰、孰能禦之、○

主挫折君王驕傲之氣、在世上列王之前、顯威可畏、

我必不永遠斥責、不恆久震怒、恐我所造之人、心神困憊、

王大聲命召諸術士、迦勒底人、星士咸至、王告巴比倫哲士曰、有能讀斯文字、解其意以示我者、則必身衣紫紫或作絳下同袍、項垂金索、治理我國、位居第三、治理我國位居第三或作治理我國三分之一下同

使偽先知所言預兆無驗、使卜筮者顯為愚、使智慧人退後、使其靈巧變為愚拙、

摩押人至神廟、底本人登邱壇以哭、摩押人為尼波米底罷號呼、首各除髮、鬚髯盡薙、

押沙龍及以色列人曰、亞基人戶篩之計、較亞希多弗之計尤善、蓋主使亞希多弗之善計、廢而不用、以降禍於押沙龍、

瑣安之候伯、盡為愚蒙、法老謀士之智者、其謀忽成拙計、焉能告法老曰、我乃先賢之後、古王之裔哉、爾之智慧者安在、萬有之主為伊及所定之謀、謀或作命下同彼當知之、當告爾、瑣安之侯伯愚蒙、挪弗之侯伯迷惑、伊及諸支派之領袖、謬引伊及人、

如彼問爾曰、緣何嗟嘆、爾則曰、因風聞將來之事、人皆膽怯、手疲心惶、膝弱如水、其事必至必成、此乃主天主所言、○

人之智慧聰明謀畧、在主前無足稱道、

詰朝、拿八醉醒、其妻以此事皆告之、拿八驚悸、魂飛膽落、僵如石然、

蓋此世之智、在天主前為愚、如經載云、主令智者自中其詭計、又載云、主知智者之意念皆徒然、
