That is why the Holy Spirit says,“ Today when you hear his voice,

for he is our God. We are the people he watches over, the flock under his care. If only you would listen to his voice today!The Lord says,“ Don’t harden your hearts as Israel did at Meribah, as they did at Massah in the wilderness.For there your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw everything I did.For forty years I was angry with them, and I said,‘ They are a people whose hearts turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.’So in my anger I took an oath:‘ They will never enter my place of rest.’”

Remember what it says:“ Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.”

“ Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.

“ Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.

So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted:“ Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.”

Oh, that my people would listen to me! Oh, that Israel would follow me, walking in my paths!

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

You must warn each other every day, while it is still“ today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.

As God’s partners, we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift of God’s kindness and then ignore it.For God says,“ At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the“ right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.

The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

“ But no, my people wouldn’t listen. Israel did not want me around.

or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.

By these regulations the Holy Spirit revealed that the entrance to the Most Holy Place was not freely open as long as the Tabernacle and the system it represented were still in use.

Jesus responded,“ Then why does David, speaking under the inspiration of the Spirit, call the Messiah‘ my Lord’? For David said,

Don’t brag about tomorrow, since you don’t know what the day will bring.

Look here, you who say,“ Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.”How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog— it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.What you ought to say is,“ If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”

And after they had argued back and forth among themselves, they left with this final word from Paul:“ The Holy Spirit was right when he said to your ancestors through Isaiah the prophet,

For David himself, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, said,‘ The Lord said to my Lord, Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.’

“ Brothers,” he said,“ the Scriptures had to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided those who arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by the Holy Spirit, speaking through King David.
