Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.

I will be his father, and he will be my son. If he sins, I will correct and discipline him with the rod, like any father would do.

Joyful are those you discipline, Lord, those you teach with your instructions.

As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father?If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all.

But if his descendants forsake my instructions and fail to obey my regulations,if they do not obey my decrees and fail to keep my commands,then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their disobedience with beating.But I will never stop loving him nor fail to keep my promise to him.No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back a single word I said.

So correct me, Lord, but please be gentle. Do not correct me in anger, for I would die.

Think about it: Just as a parent disciplines a child, the Lord your God disciplines you for your own good.

My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees.

We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy.

I get nothing but trouble all day long; every morning brings me pain.If I had really spoken this way to others, I would have been a traitor to your people.

The Lord did this to purge Israel’s wickedness, to take away all her sin. As a result, all the pagan altars will be crushed to dust. No Asherah pole or pagan shrine will be left standing.

God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
