大卫离开迦特，逃到了亚杜兰山洞。他的哥哥们和他父亲的全家听说了，就下去到他那里。

扫罗追击非利士人回来的时候，有人告诉他说：“看哪，大卫在恩盖迪的旷野。”扫罗就带着全以色列中精选的三千人，前往野山羊磐石东边去寻索大卫和他的部下。来到路旁的羊圈时，那里有一个洞穴，扫罗进去解手，那时大卫和他的部下正在洞穴的深处。

西弗人来到基比亚见扫罗，说：“大卫不是躲藏在旷野对面的哈基拉山中吗？”

义人死亡，没有人放在心上；忠诚的人被接去，没有人理会。义人被接去脱离祸患，

我用我的声音向耶和华哀求，用我的声音向耶和华恳求。我在他面前倾吐我的苦情，在他面前陈说我的患难。我的灵在我里面虚弱时，你知道我的道路；在我所行的路上，他们为我暗设网罗。求你向我右边观看，没有人理睬我，我没有避难的地方，也没有人顾念我的灵魂！耶和华啊，我向你哀求，说：“你是我的避难所，是我在活人之地继业的份！”求你留心听我的呼声，因为我极其衰微；求你解救我脱离追逼我的人，因为他们比我强大。求你把我的灵魂从被囚之地领出来，好让我称颂你的名；义人将环绕我，因为你恩待我。

你们要查清他躲藏的所有地方，确定后回来见我，我就与你们一同去。如果他在那地方，我就把他从犹大的千家万户中搜出来。”

西弗人上到基比亚见扫罗，说：“大卫难道不是躲藏在我们这里，在旷野南边哈基拉山上的何列什要塞吗？

大卫知道扫罗已经出来寻索他的性命，那时大卫在西弗旷野的何列什。
